Who knew an evening of British harp music could come with so much laughter?

Looking back at our wonderful evening at the National Liberal Club, we can’t help but smile. Beautiful music, fascinating stories, unexpected jokes, and an atmosphere that made everyone feel part of something special.

Thanks to the brilliant Abigail Millar Todd @abigailmillartodd , we discovered not only the extraordinary richness of the harp’s repertoire, but also just how entertaining a musical conversation can be!

And what a rare pleasure it was to experience the harp at such close range. An instrument we usually encounter within an orchestra suddenly revealed an entirely different dimension — its vibrations, delicate nuances, and astonishing power felt almost physically.

Yet what made the evening particularly memorable was the company. There is something incredibly rewarding about finding people who share not only your appreciation of beauty, art, and cultural heritage, but also your sense of humour!

This is what makes Renaissance-21 so meaningful to us. Beyond the concerts themselves, it’s about building a community of people who believe that our artistic heritage deserves to be celebrated, rediscovered, and carried forward.

A very special thank you to our Festival Partner, AZ Real Estate® @azreal_estate and @alisa_zotimova , for sharing this vision and helping us bring the remarkable musical heritage of the British Isles to new audiences.

And to everyone who believes in what we’re creating — thank you. Every artist, partner, supporter, and guest plays a part in making Renaissance-21 possible. It’s through this shared enthusiasm and generosity that ambitious ideas become reality.

Here’s to more beautiful music, inspiring encounters, unexpected discoveries, and plenty of laughter along the way!

More to come — stay tuned at renaissance21.world

This is where the new renaissance begins.

What survives in the canon — and what quietly disappears from it?

On 15 October, Renaissance-21 turns its attention to the musical landscape of the British Isles with Scottish harpist and composer Abigail Millar Todd @abigailmillartodd

The Harp Unheard: Forgotten Voices of Britain brings together concert and lecture, tracing repertoire that once belonged to a living musical culture but is rarely encountered on the contemporary stage. Through the works of Sophia Corri Dussek, John Thomas and John Marson, Abigail opens a window onto different periods, traditions and voices — revealing not only the music itself, but the cultural world from which it emerged.

At the heart of the evening is a question central to Renaissance-21: how is a cultural canon formed, what does it leave outside its frame, and what can we discover by looking again?

Some music disappears. Not because it lacked beauty — but because history simply stopped listening.

On 15 October, Renaissance-21 presents The Harp Unheard: Forgotten Voices of Britain at the National Liberal Club — a concert and lecture dedicated to remarkable British music that has slipped from the concert stage.

Scottish harpist and composer Abigail Millar Todd @abigailmillartodd brings these forgotten voices back into the room, combining live performance with the stories behind the music and its composers. The programme journeys through works by Sophia Corri Dussek, John Thomas and John Marson — music waiting to be heard again.

At the heart of Renaissance-21 is the belief that heritage is not something to preserve behind glass. It can be rediscovered, questioned and brought back to life.

Some shots from Act 3 at our Parsifal performance last Sunday.

Thank you to everyone who's got in touch with us about the performance. Here are some of your comments:

***

We were blown away by this world-class production. What an astounding achievement. Thank you so much.

*

The performance was simply wonderful - every aspect of it was excellent! The orchestra played better than I have ever heard with a rich, warm sound and a volume that belied the size of the orchestra. The singers were outstanding in every respect as were the choir, and it was all beautifully controlled in an understated manner by Tomas Leakey. All in all it was a memorable evening that will stay with me for a very long time.

*

The orchestra was superb, utterly professional with barely a blip in such a long performance. I find it truly remarkable that the players and singers and Tomas kept the drama and quality and momentum right through to the end of this epic work.

I've never been much of a fan of Wagner or opera and wasn't expecting to engage with this. The emotional experience was very intense. At the end of the first act I was transported into Parsifal's world: a complete suspension of disbelief.

*

It was absolutely superb and I am still thinking about it. Wagner creates a visceral response in me and this was happening after the first few bars. The performance marked a seminal experience for me. Great orchestra and conductor, great soloists. The acting contributed to creating the right atmosphere. Memorable indeed.

*

Truly wonderful. Everthing was perfect. We went to Vienna to see Parsifal last year and Inverness was its equal. A magical experience.

*

Single handedly the greatest musical experience of my life. If it were not for your work I doubt I would have ever had access to Wagner or Parsifal here in the Highlands. Arguably one of the most important cultural projects in Scotland.

While performance footage is being edited, here are some rehearsal clips from our latest project - MAHLER 6 for 18 musicians! (And HELL YES that is indeed a Bass Saxophone solo in the last clip 🔥🔥)

I can’t believe it’s been 4 weeks since our last concert - by far our craziest project yet!

Having had a little time to reflect on it, I’m in complete awe of what my incredible colleagues of the @madhouse_orchestra are able to achieve in only a few short days! This time we had 18 musicians from 10 countries 🇬🇧🇦🇺🇮🇹🇪🇸🇵🇹🇵🇱🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇱🇹🇸🇮(also coming from 🇮🇪🇫🇮🇳🇱), making up a crazy chamber-festival group that’s truly extraordinary to listen to!

Enjoy!! (Disclaimer, it is a rehearsal and some musicians are marking, so keep it wholesome 😉 Best enjoyed with 🎧
Stay tuned for more, already excited for the next one in October 🔥
