Today is National Black Women in Sports Day, an annual celebration of women-identifying athletes, coaches, trainers, and support staff.

Swipe through to learn about some of the many Black women aceing it in Duke Athletics right now💙😈

To recognize our current student athletes, we must honor who came before. Here’s a quick history lesson on Duke x Black Women in Sports:
🏐 The first Black women to be a student athlete at Duke was Phyllis Wilson, who joined the volleyball team in 1973. She was followed by Sigrid Taylor four years later, who played basketball.
🤸‍♂️ The third Black women student-athlete was Faith Brown of Duke gymnastics, with Cynthia Jones XC/T&F in the same year.
📅 The next first came ten years later with soccer’s Mariana Muiruri and lacrosse’s Natalie Lamarque.
🚣‍♀️Gwen Coleman made history in 2004 as the first Black rower at Duke.
🎾Ellah Nze joined the tennis squad in 2010.

ℹ️ All information is accredited to Fuchs et al.’s “Turning the Invisible Visible: The History of Black Female Pioneers in Duke Sports”.

Shoutout to all our Blue Devils who continue to make history every day🫶🏽
