POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

It’s very rare that I’ll go back to my (over a decade old) archives, but my heart feels unusually heavy as we lost one of India’s finest gems - the legendary Dharmendra ji.

It was 14 years ago, at the very start of my career as a journalist, that I met Dharamji for the first time. I was just 24, dressed up as a “Chor” went to interview him for Yamla Pagla Deewana at his Juhu residence. It was also my first-ever multi-camera 30 mins live interview telecasted on tv9 — online switching, two OB vans, a 10+ member crew… and on top of that, I had brought my mother (the biggest Dharmendra fan I know) along with two of her friends for a live fan interaction.

On paper, it should have been one of the most stressful days of my life.
But Dharamji and Sunny Deol turned it into one of the most beautiful ones.

I’ll never forget the warmth he showered on me, not because I was the anchor, but because that’s who he truly was. He welcomed the entire crew, my guests, and my mother with a generosity you rarely see today. The interview flowed like magic, and by the end of it, both Dharamji and Sunny had tears in their eyes. Dharamji pulled me into one of the tightest hugs and said,
“Beta, you have a fantastic energy… bas aise hi rehna.”

Even as I write this, I can feel that moment all over again.

I’m just grateful - grateful to my profession, to the path that began with journalism and presenting, and to destiny for giving me a chance to interact so closely with a legend who defined an era.

My mother still calls that day the happiest of her life, especially the moment when Dharamji hugged her and offered us homemade sweets straight from his pind. He made her lifelong dream come true… and for that, I will forever hold him in my prayers.

Thank you, Dharamji, for the films, the memories, the humility, and the love you gave to millions.
Rest in peace. You will be loved forever. ❤️
