Delta blues, also known as HooDoo music, embodies the essence of the blues in the Southern United States. It represents the rich tapestry of African-derived religious practices that have evolved in this region. The term “HooDoo” draws its roots from the West African word “juju,” reflecting the cultural heritage brought to America by enslaved Africans. These individuals, stripped of their freedom, utilized HooDoo as a complex system of magic, herbalism, and divination to protect themselves from adversaries and to heal their ailments.

It is important to note that Voodoo and Hoodoo are distinct practices. Voodoo originates from an ancient spiritual tradition known as “Vodun,” while Hoodoo serves as the foundation for herbal medicine and magical practices devoid of deity worship. Often referred to as “conjuration” or “rootwork,” Hoodoo synthesizes elements from African, European, and Indigenous religions and practices, thus creating a unique cultural expression. For instance, Black Americans, while sharing a lineage with their African ancestors, possess a blended culture, history, and DNA, representing a remix of the original African heritage, much like how Hoodoo is a reinterpretation of West African traditions. This reflects broader themes of adaptation and resilience in the face of environmental and societal challenges.

The perception of Voodoo as malevolent can be traced to its association with serpent worship. This association led many Europeans, particularly in the Western world, to view Voodoo as a manifestation of devilry. In Christian narratives, snakes are often depicted as symbols of evil, notably in the story of Genesis where the serpent tempts Eve to disobey God. Heru, commonly referred to as Horus or Har, was a highly significant and revered deity within ancient Egyptian religion. He embodied the principles of the sky, sovereignty, and warfare, and is frequently represented as a falcon or a man with a falcon’s head.

He was also associated with the sky, and was said to protect the pharaohs and the people of Egypt from the dangers of the world below.

His role as a protector and defender of the pharaohs, Heru was also associated with kingship and the rule of law. He was seen as a fair and just ruler, and was invoked in legal matters to ensure that justice was served.
