Artist Talk by AATB – I could not reach my own brain just now – 5th November, 17.45, ETHZ NO C44

AATB (Andrea Anner and Thibault Brevet, @aatb_ch) is an artist duo working extensively with robotics, incorporating programming, electronics and engineering to investigate human-machine interactions. The duo creates fantastical encounters with machines: be it a device to listen to cosmic rays at CERN, a humanoid sleeping or a large robotic arm holding and moving a hoop to create soap bubbles.
Their playful way of engaging with these often hard materials challenges how robotics is perceived and what emotional landscapes machines can evoke.

The talk is accompanied by a short research insight by Dr. Moritz Bächer, Lab Director of Robotics at Disney Research, and followed by an aperitif.

The Art & Computer Science Talks are generously supported by ETH Zürich, D-INFK, Arab Bank Switzerland (@abs.digitalart) and Hasler Stiftung.

I’m so grateful to have been invited to contribute to the ABS award monograph celebrating the collaboration between @sofiacrespo and @annaridler

A huge thank you to the brilliant editor @lucyscribbles and to @ninaroehrs from @abs.digitalart , and of course to the awardees themselves, two wonderful artists whose fascinating practices inspired me to write about the connections between nature, collaboration, time, cognition, and coding💐

I hope you get a chance to explore the monograph and read through all the wonderful essays! I’m especially looking forward to nerding out with you about the unexpected similarities between machine learning and positive breakups. 🤖🌱

Anna and I now have a book! 🌼

“Sofia Crespo x Anna Ridler: A Field of Collaboration” brings together the five projects we made together between 2023 and 2025, alongside four critical essays and an interview. It traces how we bring machine learning into conversation with photography, botanical study and tactile processes.

It was commissioned by @abs.digitalart as part of the 2025 Artist of the Year award and published by @hatjecantz.

We launched it at HALLEN 07 during Berlin Art Week with a conversation with editor Charlotte Kent @lucyscribbles about authorship, process, and what it means to collaborate with each other and with machine systems.
Thank you to @annaridler, Charlotte, the ABS team, Hatje Cantz, and everyone who came.

Where machine learning meets the natural world:

London-based Anna Ridler builds custom machine learning systems from hand-labelled datasets, Argentine artist Sofia Crespo explores the intersections of biology, image-making, and artificial life. Together, they build a very successful artist duo which investigates the links between artificiality and nature.

Our new publication “Sofia Crespo x Anna Ridler: A Field of Collaboration.” collects the five joint projects (2023–2025) that won the duo the 2025 Arab Bank Switzerland Artist of the Year Award.
Inside, an exclusive interview and critical essays explore how the artists bridge cutting-edge AI with botanical study and tactile traditions, treating technology as a living, evolving ecology.
