UNHRDSOUND:NORTH CAROLINA

Absent Colors didn’t write “Hurricane” like some big, cinematic storm rolling in from the coast. This song feels like the morning after, when the roof is fucked, the lights are dead, and you’re standing in the mess with no choice but to clean shit up.

“I grind my teeth through the static / One more step, going automatic.” That’s not poetry for its own sake. Your jaw is locked, your head pounds, and you still get up and do whatever the fuck the day requires. Then Matthew Baker screams “Every step feels like a question!”

The guitars mostly stay down in the guts of the song, punching out short riffs while the drums keep right on their ass. Then the band show some old metalcore muscle with the way the chorus opens, and enough The Word Alive in the electronics to make the modern parts feel necessary instead of pasted on.

That chorus peels everything away, one layer at a time. No light. No grace. No peace. No sound. No love. By the end, all you’ve got left is the stubborn will to keep moving.

Near the end, Absent Colors finally let the footing disappear. They use electronics sparingly, so when the guitars hand the song over to a dubstep low-end drop, the breakdown actually changes the architecture instead of just slowing the riff. For a few seconds, “Hurricane” sounds as off balance as the person inside it.

That restraint makes sense for a band whose members have spent years moving through North Carolina heavy music. They know when a breakdown matters and when another part would just be clutter.

“Never going back again” hits different every time it comes around. At first, it sounds stuck, like there’s no way out. But by the end, after “my soul feels torn / but I was forged in every storm,” it’s the will to survive.
