This episode dives deep into a new paper published by @abstraxtech about breeding cannabis for aroma. Phenohunting is a common term used in cannabis to describe the process of finding new genetics based on breeding plants, growing the plants from seed and searching for the desirable, observable traits. When it comes to smell, we often attribute the aroma of cannabis to the terpene profile, but there is much more to the story beyond terpenes. A new class of small, smelly molecules called flavorants play an impactful role in the aroma of a plant but we are not currently testing for these in laboratories. The human nose is still the most sensitive and valuable tool for smell analysis. This paper greatly adds to our understanding of how aroma differs among the offspring of the same cross and is valuable information for breeders and geneticists.
