About Book
When Nasrin Amin casts her first vote on June 12, 1993, she believes a new dawn is breaking for her country and for her heart. But decades later, the scars of one brutal night return to haunt her and her children. Mustapha, the rational dreamer; Suraj, the hot-headed soldier-in-waiting; and Zubaida, the sharp-eyed chronicler of family secrets, are all drawn into a dangerous reckoning with the man who embodies both their nation’s brutality and their mother’s deepest wound.

Colonel Jarumai has spent his life burying memories of what he has done. For Nasrin, silence has been survival. But when her sons plot vengeance and her daughter demands truth, the past can no longer stay buried.

Spanning the euphoric promise of democracy to the suffocating grip of dictatorship, Damage asks what justice looks like when silence has already stolen so much. It is a story about the cost of memory, the inheritance of pain, and the fragile hope that love might endure even after everything else is broken.

This October, we’re reading Season of Crimson Blossoms by Abubakar Adam Ibrahim, an award-winning novel about forbidden love, grief, and the courage to reclaim a part of yourself you thought you had buried.

At 55, Binta Zubairu is a widow who has spent decades living by the expectations placed on her. Reza, a 25-year-old street tough, is the last person anyone would expect her to fall for. Yet, between them, an unlikely affair unfolds, offering tenderness and intimacy while putting their families, reputations, and lives at risk.

Set in conservative Northern Nigeria, this bold and heartbreaking story asks difficult questions about desire, age, morality, and what happens when a woman dares to want something for herself.

Can love survive when the world refuses to accept it?

Books, Covers and Tea was definitely represented at the Abuja Festival of Literature and Ideas! We went to #AFLI2026 for vibes and literary conversations. We left with two new books. 🫣📚

Say hello to my little haul: Chasing Freedom by Simukai Chigudu & Damage by Abubakar Adam Ibrahim @abubakarwrites.

And they are available at @spine_and_label, Abuja’s favorite bookstore and the official bookstore for the @bookbuzzng Abuja Festival of Literature and Ideas.

Let’s be honest, “book festival budget” is a myth. You either come with self-control or you come with an extra tote bag. We came with neither and now we are broke but well-read.

Now help us decide which one to crack open first? Tell us in the comments and tell us WHY.

🇳🇬 ABUBAKAR ADAM IBRAHIM
Nigeria

Journalism is more than reporting events; it is about telling human stories, documenting important realities, and giving a voice to experiences that might otherwise go unheard. Nigerian journalist and author Abubakar Adam Ibrahim has built a career around the power of compelling, human-centred storytelling.

His journalism career includes work with Daily Trust, where he held editorial positions and contributed to coverage of important social and humanitarian issues. One of his notable reports, All That Was Familiar, published in Granta magazine in 2017, explored the experiences of two women affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.

The report earned him the 2018 Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling, recognising his ability to illuminate complex African realities through powerful reporting.

Beyond journalism, Ibrahim is an accomplished literary author. His debut novel, Season of Crimson Blossoms, won the 2016 Nigeria Prize for Literature, while his writing has received further recognition both in Nigeria and internationally.

Through his work, he demonstrates how thoughtful storytelling can deepen public understanding, preserve human experiences, and bring important social issues into focus.

At the WAFRIC Awards 2026, Abubakar Adam Ibrahim is nominated for Journalist of the Year, recognising his contribution to journalism and his commitment to meaningful African storytelling.

Nigeria is more than one story🇳🇬📚
We are history and imagination.
We are love and family.
We are mysteries, myths, dreams and everything in between.
Our country holds so many voices, experiences and perspectives and no single story could ever capture all of them.
So, if Nigeria were a bookshelf, what would be on it?
This Independence Day, we’re celebrating the many stories that make us who we are💚🤍💚
Happy Independence Day Nigeria🇳🇬

What book would you add to the shelf?
