In between sessions at Gold Ray sending the dam and shralping the wave – much to the anadromous Salmon and Steelheads’ dismay – the Ashland Mine crew and Jeffy “the Bear” were living our finest days. While they ended too quickly when our beloved Bear passed away, the memory of him and them still resonates so loudly in my mind as if it were yesterday. While our community was never the same the remnant that persisted around his love and stoke was bolstered by his incredible deep rooted Nor Cal family’s support . It made it possible to continue living with his great passion and love for rivers, family, and friends. 📷 @jeffreywishard

On the river,as it is in life, teamwork is essential. The @riverradiuspodcast with @copperjoe34 is an awesome example of one such collaborative life saving effort of our brother Joe. I’ve been remembering The Bear lately. Trying to write something down now 20 years and (almost) 2 months later that means something. I just remember that The Bear was No Big Names personified: The ultimate super fan of kayaking that cared little for ego and much for the river and its community. I want to say “The Bear didn’t find kayaking, kayaking found The Bear,” but I don’t really know that for sure. I know for sure that The Bear and this place don’t exist anymore, at least not like they used to be. Which bags a deeper question than I am unprepared to ask or answer. #fuckdams but I fucking miss this one and The Bear. 🇺🇸 📷 @jeffreywishard
