POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Things I thought were normal… that absolutely weren’t. 🚩
Explaining where I was.
Rewriting texts because I was already calculating the reaction.
Apologizing just to make an argument stop.
Thinking jealousy meant love.
Constantly checking someone’s mood before deciding what version of myself was safe to be.
None of it became my “normal” overnight.
A boundary moved.
I adjusted.
Something else happened.
I adjusted again.
Until eventually, I was living in a version of normal that the old me probably wouldn’t have recognized.
That’s why I’ll never look at someone experiencing abuse and say:
“I would NEVER let someone treat me like that.”
Because I used to think that too.
Until I was the one living it.

Leaving isn’t always the end of surviving. 💜

We hear the question:

“Why didn’t you just leave?”

But we don’t talk nearly enough about what happens after you do.

Rebuilding your confidence.
Learning to trust yourself again.
Untangling finances.
Creating boundaries.
Helping your body understand that it’s safe now.
Sometimes…meeting yourself all over again.

So today, we’re asking a different question:

💜 What is ONE thing you wish people understood about life after leaving an abusive relationship?

You don’t have to tell your whole story.
You don’t owe anyone the details of your trauma.

Share only what feels safe.

Even one sentence may help another survivor feel less alone.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
Because sometimes telling someone feels like you could lose EVERYTHING.
I was told my child would be taken from me and I would never see her again.
I was on medication for depression—and stable—but that was still used to make me believe I could lose my child.
I was told I would never survive on my own.
That I would be nobody.
And when you hear things like that enough, part of you can start wondering if they’re true.
Sometimes survivors stay silent because they’re afraid.
Sometimes because they’ve been threatened.
Sometimes because they don’t think anyone will believe them.
And sometimes they’re still trying to understand what’s happening themselves.
Instead of asking:
“Why didn’t you tell?”
Try:
💜 “What made it difficult for you to tell?”
One sounds like blame.
The other sounds like you’re ready to listen.

This statistic stopped being “just a statistic” when I realized I could have been part of it.
A peer-reviewed study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and published in The Journal of Emergency Medicine found that women who had previously experienced non-fatal strangulation by an intimate partner had about 7.5 times the odds of later becoming a victim of intimate-partner homicide compared with abused women who had not experienced prior strangulation.
I’ve been strangled by an intimate partner.
At the time, I didn’t understand how serious that was.
I do now.
If this has happened to you, please don’t minimize it. 💜

Because you are happy Alone. Because you can make yourself happy. Because you now know that your happiness doesn't depends on someone else's - yes, no, or moods.

It entirely depends on you.

And yes, you'd rather be alone and happy, than regretful and resentful when you see happy couples.

Would you rather be alone or in a relationship that makes you feel lonely? Tell me honestly.

Each one copes with trauma in their own way. I wrote poetry. Sometimes it was pain. Sometimes deep, dark, and romantic. And sometimes illusional.. because I was fighting with everything in my body to simply continue. One more day. Every single day. And on those days I'd write about a woman who had won. A woman so bright and powerful her adversaries had to look away. Or retreat.

She existed on paper long before I had the courage to become her.

I gave her the rage I was swallowing. The voice I was losing. The freedom I was still afraid to reach for.

Maybe that was how I survived. I couldn't change my reality, so I created one where I wasn't helpless in it.

We choose the demons that haunt us. Sometimes we even give them names. Sometimes we turn them into poems. And sometimes, if we're lucky, we outlive the woman who had to write them.

This thought is for anyone who has ever used words to survive what they couldn't say out loud.

Reposted from my poetry account. A thought from 2018 - with lots of love for fellow survivors of abuse. ❤️

💜💚 A LITTLE REMINDER FROM AURORA JADE PLUS 💚💜

Sometimes we need someone to remind us that we don't have to have everything figured out.

🌿 Healing isn't always a straight line.

🦋 It's okay to have good days, bad days and everything in between.

💜 You are allowed to rest.

💚 You are allowed to set boundaries.

🌸 You are allowed to outgrow people, places and situations that no longer support your growth.

🌅 Every new day is another opportunity to begin again.

❤️ Your mental health matters.

🤝 You don't have to face everything alone. Reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

If today is a difficult day, please remember:

You are enough.💜
You are worthy.💜
You are stronger than you think.💜
You are loved.💜
You matter.💜
You are not invisible.💜
You are not alone. 💜💚
You don't have to fix everything today.💜
Just take the next small step. 🌿

And if someone you know is struggling, send this post to them.

Sometimes a simple reminder..
Can mean more than we realise💜

There was a time when I seriously considered not to write my book about domestic violence. It wasn’t until 2019, when Covid hit, that I finally had time to get to work on it, and that’s when I began to learn none of my six children, or I, had healed from those years of abuse. I thought I had it all together. My children told me otherwise, all a result of questions I began to ask them while creating my first draft. There’s one incident in particular that I included in my story, when I painfully decided I had no business writing ANYTHING to help ANYONE. I was convinced I had failed as a mom. I didn’t have a degree in counseling or psychology. Why in heaven’s name did I think I was good enough to help other moms, or the credentials to write basically a technical workbook for children exposed to violence? During the next few years, the kids and I began to heal as we talked more about our feelings and how all of us were affected in different ways. They graciously convinced me to finish “The Road to Big Bear: A Memoir of Domestic Violence Survival, Faith, and Forgiveness,” which ended up being cathartic for all of us. It took five long years for me to finish. Let me add that healing is life-long. I’m learning all the time how to be a better human and especially a mom. I still fail, but I’m much quicker at talking about issues as they arise. It’s not easy, but well worth it! #domesticviolence #domesticabusesurvivor #domesticviolenceawareness #womensupportingwomen #survivor You can find my book and workbook for survivors by going to my link 🔗 in bio titled “Amazon.com/author/lizalleywrites
