ABV SUMMIT

This year’s ABV summit is exactly what I mean when I say LIVING THE DREAM.

For many of us who participated, there is a shared sentiment that this community prolongs our passions and provides a platform for us to share knowledge, opens a space that is inclusive to all wine curious people, and reinforces the feeling that our work MATTERS.

I have admired ABV from afar, and this year I had the honor of being recruited into a talented and determined family. Cheers to a future of obscure ferments, shared resources, and working with what we got. Earth is abundant, and so are we!

We went to the Ferments Summit hosted by @abvferments on Monday at @bin.bin.sake !

Hands down the most fun (and tipsiest 😂) event you could attend this summer. Nearly 40 incredible makers and fermenters, hundreds of fermented drinks and products to taste, and so many passionate people in one room.

We felt like little mice that had fallen into a grain barrel 🤣🐭🍚—sampling wines, ciders, and meads from different brands and regions, hearing the stories behind each bottle, and chatting with the owners and makers.

We left feeling so inspired and so grateful that this amazing fermentation community exist.❤️

Can’t wait for the next year’s summit! 🍷✨

@abvferments is one of our favorite events every year -- a celebration of all things beyond vinifera and one of the most incredible communities of people in the industry. We're all bound together by our passion and desire to look beyond the classical regions and grapes, and the energy is palpable from a block away in every direction.

I ( @devynn.f ) attended on our behalf and I'm still buzzing from the conversations I had (💖 @julitapplebum @brotherdante @neverbetterheather @amaro_yonino ), the food I ate (how does @mu_standard not have more followers?! That uni egg salad sando was so amazing I didn't even get a picture of it I ate it so fast!), and, of course, the stars of the show: the winemakers and beverages in attendance. It was impossible to get to everyone and to get pictures of everything (💖 @botanistandbarrel @littlecloverwine @northernroseselections @patoiswine @plebavl ) but after many years of not being able to elbow through to their tables, I managed to get a little face time with @caviarburrito and @bewitchinglee (iykyk!). I got to say hi to our friends @leftbankciders @greenpointcidery @heartsbytrue @rosehillfarm_ny and saw @wildarcfarm @accordionwines at a distance because their tables were so busy. I even chatted with @organicwinepodcast about my obsession with rondo, #irishwine , and the future of northerly, cool-climate hybrids and the countries planting them.

It was an incredible day, as always, put together by @jahdemarley.drinks @griot_tasso @co_fermented @childrensatlasofwine . We can’t wait for the next gathering!

1. 🍒baco noir, a red v. riparia x folle blanche French-American hybrid bred for phylloxera and mildew resistance in Atlantic France at the end of the 19th century was, in 1956, the most planted variety in the Loire

2. 🌱 catawba, a wild v. labrusca x sémillon cross found wild in the woods outside of Asheville, NC at the beginning of the 1800s, was, by 1860, the most-planted wine grape in the U.S., with terraced slopes in the hills outside of Cincinnati farmed by migrants from the Rhineland, most of them women, and champagne method bottles of catawba aging in caves under the streets of downtown St. Louis

3. 👾 does it have enough fermentable sugars and acidity to keep the ferment straight? apples, plums, pears, blueberries...

@abvferments turns 5 this year. kinda wild.

year 1 was so raw and organic. i wish i had more pics. thank you @bin.bin.sake @geopad @childrensatlasofwine @jimsligh @zevrovineselections @zev_rovine for helping to bring the platform to life. thank you to every producer that showed up and helped to lay the foundation. thank you to all the homies that volunteered. thank you to my community that showed tf up!

the space has evolved. the vision isn’t mine alone. the collective is strong. i have many to thank. especially @thebellejustine and @oniyxtings for keeping it all together. for giving me the grace needed to grow as a leader.

and thank you to all of our hosts and collaborators since

i wrote about [ABV] for my MBA scholarship application. it has changed my life; made it better, challenged me, forced reflection and growth.

what started as an attempt to draw more Black producers into the fold thru resource sharing and to champion ancestral techniques has taken on a life of it’s own. anyone that knows me personally knows that this is my life’s work, and i will continue pushing in any and all spaces for true sustainability.

in it’s current iteration, [ABV] is a safer space for the oddballs of the industry. melanated. queer. sustainability-obsessed. all of us together for a day of love and joy. we keep the summit as a non-profit mission driven event, because community really is the deliverable.

thank you to the dozens of volunteers that show up every year. shout out to this years organizers @mandarooney @patio.pounder @samm_hewitt who have put in work to make it nice for year 5 and @julitapplebum forever holding it down on the tech!! we have a whole team, yall.

thank you, thank you, thank you ❤️🌻
