McNair Alumni Spotlight! Here’s what our former McNair Scholar, Shayna La Scala, had to say about her time as a McNair Scholar here at CSUF:

The McNair Scholars Program at CSUF changed the trajectory of my life. As a first-generation student parent and single mother, I often felt uncertain about how to pursue a career, let alone graduate school. McNair gave me the clarity, mentorship, and confidence I needed to succeed in my pursuit of higher education. Through the program, I conducted undergraduate research, ultimately completing a thesis, strengthened my academic writing, and prepared for graduate-level opportunities I never thought were within reach to me. The workshops and guidance from faculty and staff helped me develop both professionally and personally, while the supportive community of scholars made me feel that I belonged in higher education. Most importantly, McNair instilled in me the belief that my voice, background, and research matter. Today, I carry those lessons forward in every step of my career remembering the McNair family that propels me forward. I will always be grateful to McNair staff at CSUF for opening doors that once felt closed and for inspiring me to pursue my goals with resilience and purpose.
