The BSA Summit has been around for 11 years, and there’s probably a million different words that could be used to describe it. But… if you had one word to describe it, what word would you choose? Comment Below!

In 2012, while pursuing his master’s degree at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Daniel Thomas III spent countless hours working alongside coaches, mentors, and community leaders throughout the Baltimore-Washington area. One experience has stayed with him ever since.

He helped organize a summer football showcase that brought together hundreds of young people and families, along with college recruiters, coaches, and national scouting organizations. Standing there that day, he witnessed something much bigger than sports.

He saw how youth sports could create access to higher education, expand opportunities, and open doors that might not have otherwise existed. Most importantly, he saw how intentional adults and purposeful partnerships could help shape the trajectories of young people’s lives.

That experience never left him.

As a former college student-athlete, professor at Texas A&M University, and scholar whose research explores the intersection of sports and civic engagement, Dr. Thomas has spent years thinking about how youth sports can be leveraged as a vehicle for leadership development, community impact, and opportunity creation.

Less than a year ago, that vision began taking shape through an idea: the Sports Leadership for Community Impact Conference.
On April 25, that idea became reality.

What made the inaugural conference so meaningful was not simply that it sold out. It was seeing leaders from professional sports, education, nonprofits, research, athletics, and community organizations gather around a shared purpose.

Centered around this year’s theme, “The Multiplying Effect of Purposeful Partnerships,” the conference created space for new relationships, new ideas, and new possibilities at the intersection of youth sports, leadership, and civic engagement.

This was an important milestone, but it is only the beginning.
The TRACE Lab is grateful for the opportunity to continue building spaces where research, practice, and purposeful partnerships can come together to create lasting impact through youth sports.

Honor the past. Educate the present. Trace the future.

Despite being a man of faith, and although I do believe in self fulfilling prophecy — deep down I honestly didn't “expect” for some dreams to actually come true. I’ve been told, “There is a such thing as overnight success, but it takes 15 years to get to that night.” All the poems, motivational speeches, bible versus, and mystic proverbs in the world could not have prepared me for such an important task: to influence healthcare, education, criminal justice, and energy legislation in my home state. I’m grateful to my family, friends, and teams for supporting me through the seasons that led me here. With humility, and love, let’s have a great first session.
