Subida al Volcán Acatenango 🌋 3976m

Caminar para un solo objetivo, ver desde la cima tres volcanes, uno de ellos en acción.
Pasar horas y horas sentado esperando a que se retiren las nubes y apreciarlo mejor.
No querer ir a dormir por verlo “escupir” una vez más.
Madrugar a las 3:30am para subir hasta el punto más alto y poder ver un increíble amanecer.
Desde la cama escuchar las explosiones de lava una y otra vez.

Una de las mejores experiéncias vividas hasta ahora…

ACATENANGO HIKING ESSENTIALS 🌋🥾
-
Depending if you want to do the Acatenango hike on your own or with a group there are different essentials you’ll need to bring and we show you everything we brought:

👕 2 shirts and lots of warm clothes (layers, layers, layers) as it’s around 0°C at night

🌚🌞 Head lamp, beanie and gloves for the night and hat, sun screen and sunglasses during the day

📸 Phone and Powerbank and whatever electronics you need to capture these incredible moments

🥾 Socks and hiking boots for proper grip on the slippery slopes instead of sneakers and try to find a stick in the forest and use it as a hiking pole (super helpful for ascent and descent)

🥨 Food and snacks for 24-30 hours and at least 2-3L water per person (ration it properly because more is almost impossible to bring because you have to carry it up)

⛺️ Tent, sleeping mat and sleeping bag if you’re doing it independently, on a tour they will provide you with a shelter!

🧣 Tube scarf for facial protection (otherwise when you run down the mountain, 5kg of dust will land in your face)

💰 10$ entrance fee in Guatemalan Quetzales

👉 What we can absolutely recommend if you’re not too tired and are getting a little cold at base camp, is to hike closer to the erupting Fuego Volcano to get an even closer look. It was honestly a unique experience and let us forget about the wind, cold and sore legs in a second! 🌋😱

Volcán de Fuego is famous for being almost constantly active at a low level. Small gas and ash eruptions occur every 15 to 20 minutes, but larger eruptions are rare. It's spectacular and insane to see eruptions just next to you 😍.
This volcano is a hot spot for adventure seekers and a must-do on every Central America trip 🙃🌋.

Watching Volcan Fuego erupt is one of the highlights of any Central America trip. Hikers will make their way to the base of Guatemala’s most famous volcano and will climb the adjacent (and dormant!) Volcan Acatenango for an unforgettable overnight experience ⛺.

1. Volcan Fuego erupts very frequently and consistently 🌋.
2. In order to view these eruptions, you will hike up the adjacent volcano, Acatenango ⛰️.
3. Elevation at summit: 3,976 meters 🔝.
4. Elevation gain: 1,600 meters in around 5 hours 🥾.
5. Distance covered: 13.8 km 🚶
6. Cost: 525 Q (70€) with @catravelers - you can book it in Antigua 💶.
7. Temperature at night: -7°C 🥶
8. What to bring: plenty of warm layers, minimum 3l of water, your own lunch, dinner and breakfast (from the company), plenty of snacks, extra underwear, socks, own personal items/toiletries, own toilet paper, gloves, scarf, hat, headlamp, winterjacket, sleeping bag (also from the company)... 🧣🧥🧤🌮🍶

You’ll arrive at basecamp by mid-late afternoon and get settled in. Be prepared to notice the effects of high altitude, like a headache, dizziness or shortness of breath🫠. As long as you drink enough water, you should be fine, but everyone reacts differently so it’s good to be prepared.

The 1 hour bus ride from Antigua to the base of Volcan Acatenango is a bumpy and windy ride. Take motion sickness medication if you are prone to getting car sick. But, (and this is a really important!) make sure not to take anything that will make you drowsy. You’ll need peak energy levels to tackle this hike💪.

Porque cuando llego a la cima más alta de una montaña, miro a la distancia las luces parpadeantes de las casas que en sus adentros escoden ideas, vida, amor, saberes, ilusiones, libertad. Porque cuando estoy ahí respiro profundo me quito los zapatos miro al cielo y agradezco a dios el momento que vivo. Porque cuando estoy ahí y veo a lo largo otra montaña más alta, agradezco porque si no estuviera ahí que sentido tendría mi vida en adelante.

Presenciar y fotografiar un volcán activo era una de mis metas que más me emocionaban y que mejor lugar en el mundo para hacerlo que en el famoso Volcán de Fuego en Guatemala. Esta fue una de las mejores experiencias que he tenido y sin duda de mis aventuras favoritas.
