Actor Carrie Coon joined us at the Meryl Streep Center in Los Angeles for a screening and conversation about her new film, ‘The Liberation’, from Oscar-winning director Guy Nattiv.

Inspired by the story of Nattiv’s own grandmother, the film stars Carrie as Rita, a Holocaust survivor who leaves her family to join a rural all-female commune led by a charismatic young spiritual leader (Lily James). The film also stars Bella Ramsey, Odessa Young and Tracy Letts.

As part of our Conversations series, Carrie shared how hours of survivor testimony shaped her approach to Rita, the physical work behind the film’s most daring scenes and why she initially questioned whether the role was right for her.

Actor Michael Johnston joined us at the Meryl Streep Center in Los Angeles for a screening and conversation about his breakout role in ‘Obsession’, the hit horror film from writer and director Curry Barker.

Michael stars as Bear, a lovesick music store employee whose wish to win his crush’s heart comes true at a sinister price. Made for under $1 million, the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and has since become the first original film of the decade to cross $500 million worldwide.

As part of our Conversations series, Michael opened up about the unlikely path that took him from voiceover to his breakout role, how he got inside Bear’s head and what years of near-misses taught him about letting go.

Actor and filmmaker Juan Pablo Di Pace (‘Fuller House’) joined us at the Meryl Streep Center in Los Angeles for a screening of ‘Before We Forget’, a semi-autobiographical drama he co-wrote, co-directed and stars in, followed by a conversation about bringing this personal story to the screen.

Inspired by his years at the United World College of the Adriatic in Duino, Italy, the film follows an Argentinian filmmaker struggling to finish a movie about his unrequited first love who gets an unexpected chance to revisit his memories and perhaps find a new ending to his story. Co-directed with Andrés Pepe Estrada, whom Juan Pablo met in high school, the film won the Audience Award for Narrative Feature at NewFest.
