ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Manon Achard

Manon Achard is a French-American photographer based in Los Angeles.

Manon was introduced to photography by her mother, also a photographer. A frequent subject of her mom’s work growing up, she learned about photography through her eyes. It was her mom that passed down her own camera and gifted Manon her very first Nikon FM2, and she’s shot on film ever since then.

Now, as a photographer herself, Manon is “especially drawn to rich colors and natural tones and textures” that keep her reaching back for the very same film stock—Portra 400—that she first used. Manon has printed her work in the darkroom over the past couple of years, which has become one of her favorite parts of her practice. “There’s something about the richness of color you get while printing, and the cadence - being forced to slow down - that keeps me wanting to go back,” she says. As someone who grew up always creating and making things with her hands, Manon loves how tangible the work feels in the darkroom, and the ability to come out with physical evidence of her effort.

Manon loves shooting people, whether it’s shooting fashion and lifestyle or more documentary-style work. “I feel most inspired shooting outside in nature, especially by the ocean, and almost always when people are within the frame,” she says. She is especially drawn to color, composition, and feeling, and when she sees these three things come into play with each other, that’s when she feels most inspired and moved to press the shutter. She is currently working on a personal project documenting fishermen around the world, some photos of which are shown in this series.
