Three-and-a-half years at the most underrated broadcaster in Australia.

I covered heaps of crazy stories and met so many amazing people along the way.

There was also a surprising amount of dancing, but that was my own doing.

I don’t think people appreciate how lucky we are to have a multicultural broadcaster.

If it was just left to commercial forces, I guarantee you a lot of diverse stories would not be covered, and a lot of ethnic communities would go unrepresented.

Now, more than ever, it’s important to protect our public broadcasters - long live the SBS 🙏🏾

Meet Achol Arok, a storyteller whose compassion shine through everything she does. Her journey is one of courage and purpose, a reminder of what it means to chase your dreams while staying grounded in who you are.

From her early days at La Trobe University studying Media and Communications, Achol knew she wanted to tell stories that mattered. With the support of an Access Scholarship, she pushed through long commutes, part-time jobs and the many challenges that come with chasing something bigger than yourself. That scholarship became her safety net, a quiet reminder that she was seen, supported and meant to be here.

Her path into journalism wasn’t straightforward, but it was beautifully hers. After interning and working behind the scenes at ABC News, Achol applied for the SBS cadetship multiple times, each “no” only strengthening her resolve. When she finally stepped into that newsroom, she carried with her not just skill, but heart. Reflecting on that moment, Achol said:

“Growing up in Australia, seeing only blonde hair and blue eyes on TV, I never thought being a journalist was a possibility for someone who looked like me. But you know what they say, you’ve got to be the change you want to see.”

Today, Achol is part of The Daily Aus team bringing clarity, warmth and authenticity to the fast-moving world of news. She has a gift for turning complex issues into conversations that feel personal and human, helping young Australians make sense of the world around them.

Her dedication and talent have not gone unnoticed, Achol was honoured with the Multicultural Affairs and Media Quill Award, a recognition of her powerful storytelling and commitment to diversity and inclusion in Australian media.

What truly sets Achol apart is her spirit. As an advocate for representation in journalism, she reminds us all that our stories, in every shade, accent and experience, belong. Achol’s journey isn’t just inspiring, it’s healing. It’s a story of grace meeting grit, and of a woman who continues to make space for others simply by being herself.

So incredibly grateful for almost 5 years growing TDA alongside some very talented people 🥹

When I first badgered Sam for a job in 2020, I never in a million years thought I’d get to be a part of something so special.
