I'm a real Acorns customer paid a flat fee to promote it, which provides incentive to recommend it. Investing involves risk including the loss of principal. Full disclosure in bio or at:

I started investing for our son right after finding out I was pregnant with him, and he just turned two with $16,704 invested. If we stick with our current investment strategy, he’s on track for around $1.2 million invested by age 30 and more than $3.3 million by 40.

(CRAZY FACT: if we continue contributing what we are contributing now monthly and stop when Gideon turns 18 and never invest anything else… and Gideon doesn’t touch the money until his retirement age… he’d retire with $34.2 MILLION. I promise the math is correct. Compound interest is insane, which is why the sooner you start investing the better!)

We got here without a big deposit. I started with round-ups, where every purchase rounded up to the next dollar and the spare change got
invested.

Then I added $20 a week, then $5 a day, and every time a little more room opened up in our budget, I bumped it a little higher. Most of what’s in his accounts came from extra money my online business has earned that I chose to invest for him instead of spending.

Gideon’s investments live in two places:

🤎 A brokerage account invested in simple, low-cost ETFs (there are no requirements for this account)

🤎 A custodial Roth IRA, which can grow tax-free for decades (a child needs earned income to contribute, so do research or ask your CPA how that works for your family)

He also has a 529 for his education, which I left out of the numbers above.

I use this same small, automatic habit for my own investing, and it works just as well for your finances as it does for your kids. If you aren’t investing for yourself yet, I’d start there first, since your own foundation is what makes it possible to build one for them.

💬 Comment PLAN and I’ll send you my free $5 a Day Investing Plan. It walks you through which platform to pick, which accounts to open first, how to automate it, and the simple ETFs I invest in, whether you’re starting for yourself, your kids, or both.
