Online bidding is now open for the auction benefitting @acreresidency, link in bio and stories.

John Pittman has been contributing to the Chicago art community for nearly 50 years. His intensely methodical approach has provided a welcome counterpoint to generations of Chicago artists dating back to the early 1970’s, exemplifying a diversity of practice in this city that is often overlooked. Born in Detroit in 1948, Pittman has lived and worked in Chicago since moving here in 1971 to enroll at the School of the Art Institute, where he earned his MFA. Pittman’s work has been shown at many venues over the past five decades, including Regards, Chicago; Marinaro, New York; Good Weather, Chicago; The Art Institute of Chicago; Martos Gallery, NY; Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco; Phyllis Kind Gallery, Chicago and New York; and Roy Boyd Gallery, Chicago

Introducing the LoganArts Cohort Program!
We believe in the artists and organizations shaping culture in Chicago's neighborhoods, often with the fewest resources to do it. That's why we're piloting the LoganArts Program: grants, community, and professional development for small arts organizations doing bold, rooted work. Our inaugural cohort will help us develop, test and refine the model based on their needs and their community’s lived experience.

A @chicago_reader comic inspired by E. Saffronia Downing's show PRESSED FLOWER at ACRE Exhibitions. "For ACRE Exhibitions' exhibition, "Pressed Flower" (August 14-September 27) New York-based ceramicist and artist, E. Saffronia Downing installs a series of tiles bearing the impression of a flower form the artist discovered in the concrete of her backyard. Repeated capturing this fossilized gesture and installing its record in the gallery walls, Downing provides a meditation on the meaning of everyday mark-making." Thanks for the taking the time to speak, @_saffr0nia_ , and for the connects @acreresidency, and the editorial support, @booksnotboyz

Come join us @acreresidency tomorrow for a celebration of my publication, Call for Clay, alongside my solo exhibition, Pressed Flower.

Sunday, September 20
3-4:30 PM
2921 N Clark Street

This project was absolutely inspired by my time in the clay landscape of Chicago, so it’s perfectly fitting to be sharing it with the chi town community now!

Call for Clay will be available to purchase at the event. You can also get a copy online and at various artist book stores such as @ingabooks in Chicago.

On Sunday, September 20 at 3pm, join Saffronia for a tour of her solo exhibition at ACRE Projects, Pressed Flower, and a discussion about her publication, Call for Clay, to celebrate its launch.

Downing remarks that, “foraging wild clay is an opportunity to unearth stories held by people and places. Although the earth is a source of healing, the land also holds histories of harm in its sediment. Sometimes these histories are visible in the clay, like the traces of lead, cadmium, and barium that leach from industrial landscapes and settle in clay strata. Often, these stories require conscious digging to bring to the surface.”

Call for Clay is published by the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. Purchase your copy online, @ingabooks, or at ACRE Projects.

Curated by @timeforleving & @mattea_sklut

Spend your Sunday at ACRE Projects for the launch of Call for Clay, a publication cataloging the results of E. Saffronia Downing’s crowd-sourced clay project, which explores wild clay as a material embodiment of place and memory.
On Sunday, September 20 at 3pm, join the artist @_saffr0nia_ for a tour of her solo exhibition at ACRE Projects, Pressed Flower, and a discussion about her publication, Call for Clay, to celebrate its launch.

***
Image Descriptions:
1. Call for Clay, a softcover book lays flat with the cover facing up. The cover is a sepia-toned photo of a hand reaching for clay and rocks with overlaid text reading “Call for Clay by E. Saffronia Downing with contributors.”
2. Interior spread of Call for Clay that includes a handwritten letter on notebook paper to Saffronia and signed, “w/ so much love, Alexis,” documentation of the green Ziplock bag of clay Alexis sent to Saffronia, and three small pots (low fire, mid fire, and high fire) made with the clay. The top lefthand corner of the page lets us know that the note and the clay sample was sent from Olympia, WA.
