Not all heroes wear capes…some use eBird! 🦉📲 As migratory birds fill our skies, wetlands, and forests this season, we’re gearing up to celebrate 🎉 World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) 2026 🌎️ on Saturday, October 10th! (add to your calendar 🗓️ ASAP) This year’s theme, ✨️“Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter!” ✨️ (¡Cada ave cuenta, tus observaciones importan! / Chaque oiseau compte – Vos observations sont importantes!), celebrates the citizen scientists and volunteers whose observations help us track 📍 and protect migratory bird populations. While researchers work tirelessly across our islands, they can’t be everywhere at once. That’s where citizen scientists come in—and YOU 🫵🏽 can join this dedicated community this WMBD! Observe and record the birds 📝 around you by submitting eBird checklists—whether you’re in your backyard, at your favourite park, exploring a wetland, or birding along a beach. Every observation counts! 🙌🏾 📌Every checklist you submit contributes valuable data that can help us better understand and protect migratory birds, their flyways and the habitats they depend on throughout their journeys. Head over to our blog to learn more about WMBD and citizen science! Environmental organizations and educators planning WMBD events can also access FREE 😎 organizer toolkits and educational resources. 👉 Click our link in bio #BirdsCaribbean #WorldMigratoryBirdDay #WMBD2026 #EveryBirdCounts #CitizenScience #MigratoryBirds #WildlifeMigration

What’s that on the horizon?🐦 Only the biggest birding day of the year! 🎉Global Big Day (GBD) 2026 is going down on Saturday, May 9th, and Caribbean birders are already gearing up for 24 hours of non-stop action. We want YOU to be part of it. Your sightings help scientists understand bird populations 📊 and identify where conservation action 🌱 is needed most. So—are you in? 😃 Don’t worry, you don’t need to be an expert and you won't be flying solo unless that's your style. Mark your calendar, clear your schedule, and get ready to explore your community and connect with fellow birders along the way. Pro tip: don’t wing it, make sure you have a great team and a solid plan, because failing to prepare is definitely preparing to fail. 👉 Get all the details via the link in our bio. BirdsCaribbean is once again hosting our legendary friendly GBD Teams Competition and Fundraiser🏆️, raising funds to help dedicated Caribbean conservationists and students attend our 25th International Conference in Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹. We’re on a mission to see who can spot the most species across the region and raise the most funds to support our local bird heroes. Join an existing island team or create your own! No donation is required to participate, but every contribution helps💚. Whether you bird from your backyard for ten minutes or spend the entire day trekking across your lovely island, every sighting counts for science AND your team’s total. Who will take top honors this year for most species, checklists, and endemics? Can anyone challenge the reigning champs from Trinidad & Tobago, the Piping Pawis? As with everything in the Caribbean, we soar highest when we do it together, so grab your friends and let's make 2026 the best Global Big Day yet. 🌎✨ #BirdsCaribbean #CaribbeanBirds #CitizenScience #CommunityScience #GlobalBigDayBirdsCarib #GlobalBigDay2026

The kids are saying Beach is out, Birds are IN! 😎🦩 We're incredibly proud of the work our former Board Member, Dr. Ancilleno Davis (Science and Perspective @sciperspective), is doing! 😃 Dr. Davis recently spent time on Green Turtle Cay, Abaco, 🇧🇸 partnering with the wonderful local non-profit Community Connections @gtccommunityconnections to deliver hands-on environmental education 🎓️. On October 10th, 25 adults and children dove into the world of wildlife: from late-night bug crawl 🪲 to a mosquito-bitten, but hugely rewarding, bird walk. Kids learned how to identify 🔎 17 species of birds that were spotted along the trail, master the use of field guides and binoculars, and even got a lesson in mockingbird whistling! 🎶 Resources received from BirdsCaribbean like the spotting scope 🔭 (purchased with funding from the David S. Lee Fund for Conservation of Caribbean Birds), binoculars and the 📚️Guides to the Birds of the West Indies, and left in trust with Friends of The Environment @friendsoftheenvironment in Abaco, helped elevate the experience. But the real excitement is what's next! 🤩 Science and Perspective and Community Connections will continue this partnership to build long-term sustainability by🌱: creating guide training opportunities, establishing bird and pollinator-friendly gardens, mapping the island's habitat, and creating an ecolibrary of conservation tools and guides for visitors to borrow! A true example of science in action, supporting local communities! 💚 We'd love to see the impact of your work! How are you using BirdsCaribbean resources, field guides, and training in your local community outreach? 🤔 📩Email us! Or share your story, tag us and use the hashtag #BirdsCaribbeanImpact 📲 to show how your programs are turning local youth into the next generation of conservation leaders! #BirdsCaribbean #CaribbeanBirds #TheBahamas #AbacoStrong #GreenTurtleCayBahamas #EnvironmentalEducation #Birdwatching #ConservationPartnership #CommunityOutreach #KidsInSTEM

ARE YOU perplexed by petrels? 🤔 A #CaribSeabirds enthusiast? 🌊 A staunch supporter of threatened bird species? All of the above and more? Then join the Seabird Working Group for a fascinating webinar 💻“From Lost to Listed—Conservation Milestone for the Black-capped Petrel” tomorrow Friday 14th June, 2024 at 1PM EST. Live Spanish translation will be provided. Register and save your spot here👉🏽: bit.ly/Petrel-Webinar The Black-capped Petrel 🖤 is the only seabird species endemic to the Caribbean. It is a pelagic seabird spending most of its life at sea, only returning to land to breed on the highest Caribbean mountains ⛰️, where it is called "Diablotín". But it is endangered by human activities. Once being widespread in the region, it now only nests on a few islands. Conservationists of the International Black-capped Petrel Conservation Group (diablotin.org) are working relentlessly to protect it, despite all odds, on these islands🏝️. Learn more about the mysterious Black-capped Petrel and the dedicated team who are trying to save it from further decline by joining ✨ Jennifer Wheeler (co-chair of the International Black-capped Petrel Conservation Group) and ✨ Yvan Satgé (Black-capped Petrel researcher) for tomorrow’s webinar. bit.ly/Petrel-Webinar This webinar is being hosted by Road to Recovery (R2R) and is FREE so tell your 📲friends, colleagues, even your boss! R2R is developing a process for reversing bird declines that incorporates biological and social science into a systematic species-by-species approach. They seek to understand population linkages and limiting factors causing bird declines; create targeted conservation actions for Tipping Point Species; and integrate social science, environmental and social justice, and limiting factors from biological science into a plan for the co-produced implementation of conservation. We hope to “see” you soon! 😃 #BirdsCaribbean #CaribbeanBirds #HumansOfBirdsCaribbean #webinar #SeabirdWebinar #BlackCappedPetrel #Diablotin #ThreatenedSpecies #BirdConservation #birds #petrels

The countdown is on! 💥    We are just days away from the Caribbean’s biggest and baddest bird festival! 🦩✨🦜 The Caribbean Endemic Bird Festival (CEBF) is a multi-sensory experience of vibrant feathers, sweet melodious calls 🎶 (and some that are loud and crescendoing—cuckoo lovers you know what we’re talking about), idyllic landscapes, and infectious energy of people passionate 💚 about protecting our iconic birds.     This year’s theme is 🦋 “Protect Insects, Protect Birds.” We need you to big-up small animals and rebel against ‘insectinction.’ Why? Because we depend on insects to pollinate the food we eat 🍉 and keep our environment clean and us safe from diseases 😷. And because less insects is bad news for our birds 😧 who depend on them for food for themselves and their growing baby birds.     Together we can reverse the declines in insects and birds 🙌🏽. Across the islands our amazing CEBF coordinators will be hosting exciting bird tours, bird fairs, discussions, habitat clean-ups, and much more to educate and help you develop a friendly relationship with insects🐛 and adopt simple practices with big 📈 positive environmental impacts!     Learn more about the CEBF at our link in bio 😃    Photos and videos: St. Lucia Parrot, Peter Beesley; Cuban Solitaire, Maikel Cañizares Morera; St. Vincent Parrot, Mike Akresh; Arrowhead Warbler, Wendy Lee; Ridgway’s Hawk, Dax Roman; Whistling Warbler, Glenroy Gaymes.     #BirdsCaribbean #CaribbeanBirds #EndemicBirds #ProtectInsectsProtectBirds #BirdFestival #CaribbeanEndemicBirdFestival #CEBF2024 #FromTheNest #BirdEducation #EnvironmentalStewardship #caribbean #birds #birding #BirdPhotography #BirdLovers #conservation #nature #ConnectToNature #Insects #SavingTheInsects #InsectsMatter #InsectinctionRebellion
