NUANCE ALERT ➡️ on the one hand I feel profoundly disenchanted that (imo) we’re living in the apex of a certain strain of market-driven cultural illiteracy/ aesthetic laziness....while at the same time obviously understanding that no one (including me) is necessarily "reinventing" music (either), but perhaps (at best) is “innovating within the traditions”…ETC ✅ ✨🤪

I nonetheless place an extremely high premium upon the artists I admire having a clearly *distinctive* fucking voice (and generally speaking I also take some pride in that listeners of my work probably would never say, “oh this is just another ______ homage/ clone”) *+ personally when I can immediately glean who an artist’s main influences are within the first 𝗙𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗦𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗗𝗦 of whatever it is I consider that to be a fucking *failure* of creative imagination ! 🤓✍🏻❌𝗕𝗨𝗧 THAT’S JUST ME OK RANT OVER LOVE YOUUU BYEEEEE ✨🕺✨💋✨

OFC "don’t let men gather in groups larger than two” is obviously hyperbole. IMO the point isn’t the "arithmetic" but what *actually* happens when patriarchal collaboration becomes institutional ✨😵‍💫✨

the same dynamics that turn a handful of guys into a "pack" > status seeking, domination, loyalty over accountability, violence normalized through the group, don’t disappear when you scale them up...but become corporations, militaries, governments, empires, and movements that can dress themselves in any ideology, including ostensibly progressive ones.

that's why patriarchal power can easily survive the so called "culture wars"; It doesn’t care whether it speaks the language of tradition or liberation, only about preserving hierarchy, collaboration around domination, and the systems that reward them.

a genuinely feminist critique doesn’t just challenge individual men- it challenges the material and psychological architecture that makes this pattern possible, from the group chat to the state, + IMO that's why it so often provokes backlash far beyond the people it appears to be criticizing.

(+ I am definitely 𝘯𝘰𝘵 interested in fukin debating anybody about this, so if anything I said here triggered or offended you, PLEASE… just fukin 𝗦𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗜𝗧/ quietly see your way out, etc. 😜🙏🏼✨

WOW...I'm having all the feels, as the kids say 🥰✨last night was genuinely exciting, inspiring, and moving and I am so grateful to have been able to catch one of these @rush gigs (esp. as, like I said, it had been almost 44 (!) years since I last saw them play)

I feel like I now have a sort of more embodied sense of the emotional logic of their choice to play with Anika, who, aside from being a f*cking technical powerhouse, plays with *so* much heart and is such a rock-SOLID presence, and clearly a great artist. somehow, I imagine (I think probably correctly) that the entire spirit of where they are now is obviously not wanting to play with just a “Neil clone”; Neil wouldn’t have wanted that (+ obviously they don’t want it either.)

in other words, I wholeheartedly get the decision to play with someone like her, but more specifically, HER, as she is a f*ckin *SPECTACULAR* musician, period! 🔥❤️🔥

that said, + just to be completely honest, I also found myself really emotionally aware of the depth of Neil’s presence in all the music, how integral he was to the totality of the feeling. I occasionally missed some of his legendary fills/ his overall presence, which was just mindblowing in its incredible imagination, flamboyance, but also palpable humility and sensitivity. it was truly inspiring to be viscerally reminded again of how special a musician and a human Neil Peart was 🙏🏼✨💕

anyway, I have profound gratitude for my friend @thomasjhickey for getting me a ticket to this (and it was also great to meet and hang with @chadpolk too 🙌🏼) and I felt waves of radiant JOY throughout the entire concert 🙏🏼❤️✨🤯🔥💕!!! RAD

RUSH f*cking RULES. RUSH FOREVER!!! + ANIKA forever!! good stuff ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️!

P.S. notice Geddy's hilarious tee at the end 😂
