Here's a small example of why the FLORIDA RULES FEST is extremely important to us, we have been playing shows in the Tampa area since 1997 & Tom Stev has looked out for us & so many others. It's truly always great to play with so many friends, & the comeback of @nervousbreakdownfla on Friday night is not only nostalgic but super exciting!! Can't wait to see everyone & to kick it with everybody!!

LONG POST: Here’s the truth behind Prison and the now-infamous Hurt EP, as I remember it.

In late 2013, Austin Coupe and I were both in signed touring bands, unclear about whether or not we were legally allowed to start another project. We wanted to create something on the side - something visceral, heavy, blunt, and unpolished. Something that would scratch a certain creative itch without ever requiring anything of us, since we already had our hands full with Adaliah and Dark Sermon, respectively.

It was meant to live as an anonymous internet project, nothing more. A few demos written behind a gas station in Odessa (The Goat House), just for fun.

Imagine what you’d say if you never thought anyone would find out it was you who said it. Our member list on Bandcamp simply read “No one.” That type of insulation allowed for a freedom that didn’t exist in our other bands - one that fostered something wholly unique and unreplicatable.

It’s a common misconception that we broke up Dark Sermon and Adaliah to form Prison, but the truth is the exact opposite. We never planned to play a single show, print a single t-shirt, or take it seriously at all. It was only when our other bands became inactive that we decided to pursue Prison full-time.

To our surprise, our early demos earned the attention of several significant industry players, including both indie and major labels. It had always been my dream to sign to a major label and play arena shows, ever since I was 4 years old, so we began jumping through hoops to do whatever it took to see those opportunities through.

Some of those hoops consisted of taking down the demos we had uploaded to Bandcamp and submitting new demos to these industry folks on a regular basis, building in stealth towards a massive launch so that we could debut as a larger-than-life band out the gate.

Fast forward through countless emails, meetings, studio sessions, and will-they-won’t-they calls with decision makers, the record deals fell through. Years of tireless work behind the scenes with nothing to show for it.
