I joke that when I grow up, I want to be Imogen—my best friend’s daughter.

But honestly, I’m only half joking.

She’s being raised in a world of yes, you can. A world where girls are sponsored in sports that used to be “for the boys,” where she’s advancing in STEM ahead of just about everyone, where being a voracious reader is something to be celebrated.

And she gives me feedback on my work. I listen.

I look at her sometimes and realize I’m watching a version of my own childhood dreams unfold in front of me.

Not because I get to live them through her. They’re hers.

But because every generation of girls gets to stand a little farther forward because the ones before them pushed the line.

So maybe I didn’t become everything I once imagined I would.

Maybe some of my dreams simply grew legs and walked into the next generation.

And I get a front-row seat.

I’ll be her cheerleader.
Her fan.
The annoying adult who tells her she can do hard things.
