The boys deciding that we should go out. Did we get slayed? YES. Did we score? A FEW. Would we do it again? PROBABLY. #nzsurf #nz #surf #aotearoa #newzealand

Marēhia stretched me, like no other whenua has stretched me before. 🧠 💭

Kua rongo au mo tēnei mea te ‘multiculturalism’ but this was the first wheako where it was felt in my bones. Various ahurea overlap and intertwine with each other, as do forms of spirituality and decorum. Truthfully, this left me unable tell my left foot from my right 😅 My only compass was our indigenous brothers and sisters 🫶🏽 Who shared so generously their way of life, their practices and customs, and their emphasis on community.. mirroring back the ways in which we are so connected as a global community.

To our Orang Asli, Bidayuh, Iban and Kadazan whānau… Tēnā koutou i tō koutou manaaki mai i tō iwi Māori, i ō teina. Thank you for all the gifts; physical, but mostly.. all the other stuff 🦋🌃⚡️🏹 🪨

The Bidayuh-Māori Cultural Exchange 👌🏽 Kāore i kō atu, kāore he mahi i tua I te noho tahi ki iwi taketake kē. Kia ako, kia kite, kia rongo i ngā tauritenga, i ngā tauaro anō hoki. what an absolute privilege to have an evening curated for us by our Bidayuh tuakana. We were greeted with durian (their traditional inu waipiro) followed by a mini symposium where we exchanged whakaaro Re: the importance of cultural preservation. With every engagement, it solidifies our gratitude to be apart of a wider indigenous ecosystem, as well as the grit and determination by our tīpuna so we have access to the opportunities we have access to today.

Nā mātau te whiwhi 🤲🏾

@tehonongaakiwa ki @semenggohwildlifecentre 🌿 what a wheako. we got to marvel at our tuakana the orangutang, who are considered atua or deities to our taketake whānau. I’ll leave the kōrero tuku iho tapu to those here in the haerenga, but each day here in Malaysia, we learn so many synergies. Especially our connection to the taiao, and how we consider our natural world tuakana to us as ira tangata.

Huge congratulations to one of our recent graduates, Adam!

It’s always great to see the successes of our past students and to hear that Adam is thoroughly enjoying the first couple weeks of his new job is awesome.

He wanted to share a bit of wisdom for current and future students:

“The future is what you make it, always follow your dreams because anything can happen… If you want to be happy, don’t dwell on the past, dont worry about the future either, just focus on living in the present 💯”.

Best of luck Adam!

Christchurch is getting plenty of swell this week, just need to look for those offshores/calm days. Tomorrow morning looks fun. Thanks to @adam_nzz for this vid.

Saturday setting to be fun in Christchurch, with a 1m swell, winds are variable with offshores then onshore then offshore again. Keep an eye on those winds. Cheers @adam_nzz for the vid, how's that board!
