All head, no tail.

Meet the ocean sunfish or mola mola. They are quite possibly one of the most strikingly unusual creatures in the sea. A newborn mola is smaller than size of a popcorn kernel but grow to weigh over a ton, making them the heaviest bony fish in the world!

These giants can dive to 500 meters to hunt for food, only returning to the surface to recharge and regulate their body temperature. Since they spend so much time in the deep— spotting one is usually a rare treat.

We are incredibly lucky here in Southern California to see them as regularly as we do, and this summer has brought an unusually high number of sightings along the coastline!

This curious giant hung out with us for a while, slowly creeping closer to get a better look at us.

Kandu 🩵

Between the dream-like wildlife sightings and the strangers who quickly became family, time moved way too fast - trading sleep for long days in the ocean and nights dancing on the boat.

Every day taught us something new about this blue planet, and every wildlife encounter reminded us why we need to protect it.

Cheers to the magic, the shared knowledge, and the boat raves 🐋🦈🩵

If you ask me this could have been the music video for this Phil Collins track. Persistence, time in the ocean and sleep deprivation… The Kandu team was buzzing we were so stoked to have swam with the biggest fish in the world at night 🌙

3 quick facts about whale sharks…
•despite their names, they are in fact sharks and not whales!
•they are filter feeders, they strain plankton and small fish through their gills.
•whale sharks can be recognised by their unique and individual spot patterns.

A big congratulations to Adam for joining the 100ft club (30+ meters)! 👏 👏

If you just follow the good feelings the depth does come! So many people worry about their courses and completing the requirements, but typically just if someone can focus on the enjoyment of the process and having fun, then meeting the requirements is such an easy afterthought!
