Last week, we were in Texas for the 12th stop on our Atlantic Across America tour—kicking off in San Antonio with Texas Public Radio, continuing to Austin for a standing-room-only conversation at the LBJ Library, and wrapping up in Dallas in partnership with the Hay Festival.

Across these three cities, The Atlantic’s Elaine Godfrey, Jeffrey Goldberg, Adam Harris, Mark Leibovich, Ashley Parker, Vivian Salama, Yvonne Wingett Sanchez, Adam Serwer, and Evan Smith participated in conversations focused on the state of journalism and the First Amendment, military and congressional oversight, the midterms, the economy, and more.

Our nationwide tour will eventually bring us to all 50 states. Up next: Portland, Maine, tomorrow; Atlanta, Georgia, in November; and Los Angeles, California, in December. Sign up for tour updates at the link in our bio.

This year we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of Negro History Week (now known as Black History Month) and we attributed the founding of NHW to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. We’ve gotten that story wrong.

While no one did more to nationalize and create a movement and a network that prioritized the study and celebration of Black history, Dr. Woodson did not originate the idea. I am honored to introduce new scholarship to the Journal of African American History with a lead article that corrects that narrative and hopefully forces all of us to rethink the centrality of HBCUs in cultivating race consciousness amongst Black youth during the 19th and 20th centuries and how the work of various race men and women paved the way for the study and celebration of Black history.

In 1921, on the campus of @ncatsuaggies, President James B. Dudley and his wife Susan Dudley organized and executed the first Negro Week celebration. It was complete with recitals and presentations from students, a keynote from the eminent scholar and @morehouse1867 graduate Benjamin Brawley, and an invitation for the surrounding community to join. The university calendar marked these celebrations by referring to them as “Negro History Week” as early as 1922 and they even hosted Dr. Carter G. Woodson to speak at the NHW celebration on campus in 1925. Thus by 1926, the year that Woodson launched his own version, he was well aware of the work of James and Susan Dudley and what was going on at NC A&T.

The Dudley’s are featured in this lead photo and I hope this creates an opportunity for us to reconsider the role of HBCUs and their intellectual traditions along with their efforts to center race consciousness for Black youth. The latter was powered by a strong commitment to the humanities and social sciences by women such as Susan Dudley.

This new edition of the Journal of African American History is now available online and print copies will be available very soon. HUGE thank you to the best archival team in the country at the @ncatblufordlibrary who made many of these primary sources available to me during my research. This isn’t Aggie history or HBCU history, it’s American history.

Adam Harris from The Atlantic came to hang with the fellas — and left us with a word. 🎙️

When we devalue our public schools and community colleges, we’re not just devaluing institutions. We’re devaluing the next generation of Americans — and, ultimately, the American project itself.

Public education is an investment in who we become.

I love #theatlanticfest so much. Don’t let my inability to make any kind of normal face onstage fool you. Some highlights: I had my makeup done next to Ben McKenzie and he said there’s “talk” about an OC revival. We ate pizza. Padma talked very brilliantly about modern media. And I found my outfit for next year’s fest at the Brooklyn Museum, thank you Iris van Herpen.

#HearThis Sharing 3 pieces of Black specific content with my kids this week.

“I believe in Liberty for all men: the space to stretch their arms and their souls; the right to breathe and the right to vote, the freedom to choose their friends, enjoy the sunshine, and ride on the railroads, uncursed by color; thinking, dreaming, working as they will in a kingdom of beauty and love.” — by W.E.B. Du Bois

“The military has historically been a powerful force for integration in America — even as its top ranks have been slow to reflect the racial makeup of the country. Host Adam Harris speaks with the Atlantic staff writer Clint Smith, who wrote in the July issue of the magazine about what it means that the gradual, visible racial progress in the military is being degraded as Black officers are pushed out.” — @theatlantic

Inspired by àdìrẹ, the rich Yoruba textile tradition originating in southwestern Nigeria, the project will transform The Bentway’s iconic figure-eight Skate Trail into a vibrant landscape of pattern, movement, storytelling, and collective play.

Today The Atlantic’s flagship podcast Radio Atlantic is launching a new Monday-morning video episode hosted by Adam Harris, who joins Hanna Rosin as co-host of the show. Adam will anchor every Monday, focusing on stories that set the agenda for the week ahead; Hanna hosts the show on Thursdays. Semafor’s Max Tani wrote about the launch: “This expansion is part of a surge of audio and video at The Atlantic, which has doubled its number of weekly shows, podcast staff, and audio revenue in the past year.”

Among the new senior hires on the podcast team, who have spent their careers shaping audio and video journalism: Mike Pesoli, video podcast producer; Hadley Robinson, senior supervising producer; Christopher Beha, senior editor for video podcasts; and Rebecca Davis, senior producer for video podcasts.
