Has the Fed hiked too much? The Federal Reserve has officially marked it’s 10th consecutive rate hike since March of 2022, with the most recent being by 0.25%, to a range of 5% to 5.25%. Has the Fed hiked too much? It’s entirely possible, according to Ashish Shah, Chief Investment Officer with Goldman Sachs, “It's also entirely possible that the Fed is overtightened by 200 basis points compared to what is consistent with financial stability,” he states. Fed Chair Jerome Powell does not expect inflation to come down as quickly as everyone hopes. That being said, many believe the Fed may start cutting rates this year – but demand and labor market conditions would need to weaken more for rate cuts to take place. It will be important to monitor how financial conditions shift over the coming months. A U.S. recession is becoming more likely — during a hiking cycle, it is more difficult for policymakers to manage tightening credit conditions because credit contracts very slowly at first. The recent banking system stress has added another degree of difficulty to the situation – with the resulting tightening of credit roughly similar to that of an additional 50-basis point hike.
