Architectural, In Its Truest Sense.

Selling: 18 Dominion Road, Mount Martha

Ross Bakker has a reputation for perfectionism. He’s spent 30 years building for clients through Bakka Constructions, but this time, no client was there to rein him in. He built this house for his own family and made almost everything by hand.

When a cabinetmaker’s workshop closed, Ross bought its container of rare, furniture-grade West African Danta at auction and hand-laminated it into the rafters and stair treads. Architect and furniture maker Adam Markowitz turned the rest into joinery, cladding and lighting, down to a copper-sleeved stair rail.

Markowitz calls it the Handmade House. Its mid-century H plan separates living from sleeping, and centres around a warm courtyard and a cool, native-planted one. The living zone sits upstairs for the northern light and Port Phillip Bay views, directly above a covered alfresco deck with an open fireplace. The main suite looks west to Port Phillip Bay.

Ross hand-tamped the rammed earth too. Between that and the home’s orientation, the family has never needed air conditioning – it’s truly a solar-passive build.

Downstairs, two bedrooms and a second living space lock off with separate entry. Out the back there’s a studio office and a private gate to South Beach and the tennis club.

Nobody builds like this for someone else.

A house we’ve completely fallen in love with. Built by Ross Bakker of Bakka Constructions for his own family alongside Architect and furniture maker Adam Markowitz, almost every detail of this extraordinary home was handmade, creating a level of craftsmanship that is increasingly rare. From the incredible timberwork to its beautifully considered architecture, this is a home where every detail tells a story. More at ppau.live/handmadehouse

Responding to the evolving demands of the modern work-from-home culture, "A Cabinet of Curiosities" is a bespoke, multifaceted piece crafted by @adammarkowitzdesign for an apartment in East Melbourne.

The clients, who are avid collectors, needed a functional intervention that could display their treasures, serve as a closable workstation for better work/life separation, and gracefully screen a newly built neighboring tower.

The design elegantly achieves these goals without completely blocking the natural light from the window beyond. The result is a highly dynamic piece featuring tambour doors that seamlessly slide away, allowing the cabinet to shift rapidly from a solid, barrier-like structure to a porous, light-permeable object.

A look back at an evening with Forested Future in Bangkok.

From the screening to the conversations that followed, the evening brought people together around a shared interest in forests, nature and their future.

A meaningful night of stories, ideas and connection.

Further hot shop action shots of @adammarkowitzdesign and I navigating our latest ‘Kindling’ design.

Two superb 3m lengths of blackwood timber meticulously shaped and finished brought onsite & subjected to the glories of molten glass.

The charred scars of the wood and the precise undulations of the suspended glass creates the evidence of the two materials interaction - each delivering the results of the other.

This is definitely our most challenging pendant design to date with absolutely zero tolerance for either material.

Special thanks to @_hannahcaldwell for the remarkable images & thanks to my team @nick.doran.adams.glass @keely.varmalis & Trish Roan.

Have you heard of craft washing? When a mass produced product is given a flourish that makes it appear to be made by hand when it’s actually not.

Shoutout to @adammarkowitzdesign for sharing this concept with me, which sent me down a rabbit hole.
