Pointe shoes are probably one of the most personal pieces of a ballet dancer’s kit. Different makers. Different models. Different widths, strengths and shapes. Some dancers like them harder, some softer. Some break them in carefully. Others attack a brand-new pair with the confidence of someone who has done this several thousand times before. Then come the modifications. Ribbons. Elastics. Padding. Cutting things. Sewing things. Bending things. Occasionally doing things to a perfectly expensive new pair of shoes that would alarm the person who manufactured them. And then there’s the search for the shoe... Some dancers are incredibly lucky and find the one that really works for them quite early in their career. Others can be more than a decade into professional life and still be testing, tweaking, changing makers, changing models, and quietly wondering whether the perfect pair actually exists. Bodies change. Repertoire changes. Feet change. What worked five years ago might suddenly feel completely wrong. So even after years of experience, the search doesn’t necessarily end. And after enough time, most dancers develop their own very specific routine. You know exactly how you want them to feel. Exactly what needs changing. And usually within about three seconds of putting a pair on, whether the relationship has a future. I think almost every professional dancer has a pointe shoe story - the maker they finally found, the pair that died at precisely the wrong moment, the strange little trick they swear by, or the shoe they loved that was suddenly discontinued. They’re a tool, but they become a strangely personal one.
