22 years sitting. Still finding reasons to stand.
Today, September 5, is World Spinal Cord Injury Day.
I’ve been living this life for a long time, and one thing I know for sure is that awareness is great, but what really matters is what happens after people become aware.
Do we listen to people actually living with SCI? Do we include them in the conversation? Do we make places, opportunities and experiences genuinely accessible?
And maybe most importantly, do we see the person before we see the wheelchair?
I’ve had an extraordinary life with SCI. I’ve also had plenty of moments when the world made things much harder than they needed to be.
There is still a lot of work to do.
So on World SCI Day, I’m very happy to be one of the voices saying: keep asking questions, keep learning and please keep making room for us at the table.
We have a lot to bring to it. 🤍🤍🤍
