Following the launch of UK Music’s Black Music Means Business report, we’re excited to feature Wendy Cave, Project Manager of the report and Partner at Counterculture, Research Lead Vick Bain and Senior Researcher Natasha Hendry as they share how the consultancy shaped the report and highlighted the economic and cultural impact of Black music in the UK. The team share how the consultancy has shaped the report and highlighted the economic and cultural impact of Black music in the UK.

In the latest edition of the Art of Listening, Keith asks what happens when fewer working-class voices make it into our music culture.

Drawing on the Class Ceiling report from Greater Manchester, he explores the growing barriers to creative careers, from arts-deprived schools and disappearing youth spaces to an industry shaped by algorithms and rising ticket prices.

If fewer working-class artists get through, the consequences aren’t just economic. The stories shift. The perspectives narrow. The cultural imagination shrinks.

From The Beatles to Oasis, punk to grime, the UK’s global music legacy was built on working-class storytelling. So what do we lose when those voices are no longer amplified?

A reminder that his new book Body of Work: How the Album Outplayed the Algorithm and Survived Playlist Culture is out now.

I have just emerged from one of the best days of my life where I was honoured with not one but two awards for my work @blacklivesinmusic. It was a privilege to be recognised by two prestigious organisations @thebbbawards and @musicweekinsta Women in Music Awards. I'm awestruck 🤯

🏆 I won Campaigner of the Year at the 10th edition of Women In Music Awards. The biggest one yet held the @grosvenorhouselondon in Mayfair. It was wonderful to be surrounded by family and friends in the industry and @blacklivesinmusic team, illustrious Board and Taskforce @jamesjosephjj3 @janeace77 @orphyvibes @mykaellriley @paulette.long.obe @_fairykt Moses Oyediwura, Catherine Ann Smiles, Raye Harvey, Desiree Banugo So many amazing Women were also honoured @lornaonre @thedottyshow @stephaniehc @rupinder_virdee @gabycartwright @iammissjacqui and posthumously Michelle Kerr. I want to thank @george_garner8 my dear friend and the @musicweekinsta team for voting and supporting our work and again to Women in Music Award founders @larakbaker and #AlisonWenham for recognising of the ladies working hard in the Music Industry. #MWWIM

🏆 I was a finalist at Black British Business Awards in the Arts in Media category. This is a special organisation that is now very dear to my heart. As the news of my nomination just when I needed it. The warmth I experienced from the @thebbbawards team and founder and leader Dr Sophie Chandauka was unparalleled. I will be a supporter all of my days. Although, I did not win this award (it wasn't a contest as I was up against my Shero @laurahallain creator of the iconic children show Jo Jo and Gran Gran and the genius @vibecalledtech founder Charlene Prempeh) I felt I came away with something more valuable new friends and a new network of professionals. A heartfelt thanks to you @thebbbawards see you next year for sure ❤️

🥂 We toasted off the celebration at a private party in Mayfair with close friends and family.

I am so grateful for such a special day. Thank you to my husband, who had a nightmare of a day but still smiled the whole way through. You are amazing @rob18oye. I love you ❤️ Words cannot describe how much I needed this. Long may it continue.

It's been a real joy and privilege working with ADD. Rowan's summed it up perfectly ❤👇🏽

Repost @rosie_row

After over a year it’s so great to reach this point, and the partnership with @ppl_uk is a wonderful way for @add_uk_ to announce its arrival!

I’m lucky enough to be working with some of the music industry’s most esteemed individuals, helping them to realise their vision and effect positive and necessary change.

ADD will tackle underrepresentation at senior levels in the music industry and support those with protected characteristics (particularly race, gender, disability and religion), who are not progressing within organisations. Affectionately know as “the elders”, ADD will use their experience, expertise and networks to provide a variety of positive, supportive solutions that will clear the path towards a richer, more inclusive and integrated cultural landscape at all levels.

I'm extremely proud to announce the arrival of @add_uk_ , Action for Diversity and Development

A few months ago I had a call from the lovely @rosie_row asking if I'd like to be involved in helping this remarkable group of individuals revive an organisation that was set up in 2009 to tackle inequality in the music and creative industries.

Like many, they saw the heightened, global consciousness following the murder of George Floyd in May 2020 and the subsequent movement which highlighted many of the existing and systemic inequalities across society, as an opportunity to address with greater vigour, some of the long-standing disparities present within the industries they know and love.

It's been a few months of quietly working away behind the scenes and it feels great to be able to share this with you all today. It's been an honour to be involved with the rebirth of this essential organisation. I'm looking forward to watching it grow and seeing the impact it will have on an industry very close to my heart.

Please check us out and give us a follow on all platforms: @add_uk_ for more info head to the website, link in my bio 👆🏽
