When I asked 13-year-old Davis what he liked to do when not in school, he had one definitive answer – FISHING! He goes all the time, occasionally with his dad, Wes, but most often with his grandfather. Sometimes his grandfather lets him steer his boat. So really, anything nautical with a rod and reel is right up Davis’s alley.

At first, I thought I wouldn’t be able to deliver anything relating to those hobbies during our walk in the city. But then on Roosevelt Island, we saw a few guys fishing along the waterfront, which got Davis excited. Big sister Addison even Googled which fish could be found in the East River for him. (I just know not to eat them.)

I’ll get to another Davis moment soon…

This full-day adventure was with mom Casey, dad Wes, and the two teens. We explored DUMBO, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Financial District, Roosevelt Island, and Central Park, plus a quick dip into Greenwich Village.

Addison and I spent time chatting about her move to college in the fall. We joked frequently about the fact that the university she is attending is NOT on the top 5 list of party schools… No sireee. (It’s been cemented on that list for decades!) Addison isn’t into that scene, but I’m sure she will find her niche and her people quickly. There’s room for every type of person in college.

Back to Davis… who told me he plans to knock down his sister’s wall to expand his own room after she leaves for college…

Casey asked about the pond that appeared in the children’s book Stuart Little. It’s called Conservatory Water in Central Park, where you can rent remote-control sailboats. When I mentioned that, Davis lit up with excitement. “Can we do that?” he asked. “Absolutely,” I said. While I had taken guests by the area before, this was the first time anyone actually wanted to sail the boats! I was thrilled.

And it was the sweetest thing. The main photo in this post says it all. That’s Davis and his dad having one of THOSE moments. Casey, Addison, and I were watching from a nearby bench.

So, there was fishing and boats… and tons of photos on this amazing day with an amazing family. Thanks Casey, Wes, Addison, and Davis!
