It’s part of architectural marvel, the Azabudai Hills, a five-billion-dollar urban development project in Minato, Tokyo. Stepping into the property feels like stepping forward in time by around four-hundred years—said to be the largest skyscraper development in the world, the 2.4 hectare area is home to an international school, branches of Hermès and Cartier, a sweeping landscape pergola designed by British-based visionaries Heatherwick Studio, and Tokyo’s tallest building, the Mori JP Tower. Its penthouse suite is a triumph of modern hospitality, with brain-bending views of Tokyo Tower, its earthy colors and chic furnishings slashed through strikingly with the setting sun. The bath, a sweeping, delicate half-egg of ceramic, is simply a dream—even just the idea of soaking in it makes the relentless buzz of one of the world’s greatest metropolises fade away. It’s a cathedral of Tuscan marble and wrought-iron chandeliers, where one worships at the altar of dry-aged Wagyu, rosemary focaccia, and cacio e pepe buccatini. The panoramic views of the Chicago River only add to the sense of the mystical. We start with a signature cocktail, the Giribaldi Banger, an electric orange coupe with a crystal orb of ice, flavors of luxardo gin and campari. It’s just the right segue to the Alici Marinate, where anchovies swim in a zesty sea of salsa verde and lemon. As we take the first bite of our main—pillowy cappelloni filled with tender short rib and ricotta—we catch the man next to us quickly scraping a drop of sugo off the white table linen, and hurriedly into his mouth. For the restaurant’s first ever lunch service—opened just for @velocity.black —members were seated at the exclusive Chef’s Table, where they embarked on a one-of-a-kind trip through 23 courses of Spanish sunshine. Guests also enjoyed a unique daiquiri, with a touch of charcoal that transformed it from desert orange to (Velocity) black. To round things out, some surprise guests.
