PATCH ADAMS • prescribed by Dr. Hunter Doherty “Patch” Adams; a medical doctor, social activist, and professional clown who founded the Gesundheit! Institute in ‘72. He views himself primarily as an activist for peace, justice, and universal care rather than just a funny doctor. He entered medical school in 1967 aiming to use medicine as a vehicle for social change. Through the Gesundheit! Institute, he has spent decades working to build a model for a free, 40-bed rural community hospital that does not charge money, carry malpractice insurance, or accept third-party reimbursements. For decades, he and volunteer clown posses have traveled to dozens of countries—visiting orphanages, war zones, and refugee camps—to share humor and compassion with people in distress. Although he felt the film “Patch Adams” reduced his life’s work and political activism to a simplistic, commercial depiction of a quirky physician, noting that the movie’s profits did not support his free hospital project… he did thank Robin Williams for the gesture. Patch Adams is very well still alive and continues to lecture and organize volunteer clown trips around the world. He is based in Urbana, Illinois and remains active with his Gesundheit! Institute.

I made this thinking about all of the pills that are consumed daily in the world just to make people feel good, and I’m not only talking about hard drugs like xanax or ecstasy… even vitamins that make you feel good when you wake up or pills that make you feel like shit when you coming down. But everybody takes some kinda pill… it’s inevitable. Both make you feel good for a moment, both take you down a specific road mentally, until you make it back to reality… if it’s “good or bad” that’s all up to you. Every detail in this has a real life experience behind it; from the symbol on bottom of the pill bottle to the demons in the dark in the background to the cross-shaped xanax pills. It all goes deeper for me personally, running through my own religious beliefs, the crowd you keep around is a reflection of who you are, etc… make someone smile today. Handsomely.

This is my nephews first 2 days working in a gym. after day 1 I didn’t have a conversation with him about shot making, or his results.

I spoke to him about how to meet the feeling of frustration and the feeling of inadequacy. We spoke about tools for regulation. We spoke about his approach. One the way to say 2 I told him, you’re going to be frustrated at some point today, and we can meet the frustration and overcome it, or you can let it defeat you and make you avoid all the good that comes on the other side of it.

As a leader it’s not my job to save him from the discomfort. It’s my job to prepare him with the tools to move through it. And give him the little push of will and encouragement that allows him to find what he’s looking for.

He didn’t need to be saved, coddled, or on the other hand… forced to perform…. he needed context for his experience. I provided that, and he took care of the rest.

He came up to me after with a grin and said, “how did I do?!”
I told him from the amount of fun you had, you killed it!

But I know him. He wanted to make some shots, be more aggressive. He’s at that stage of wanting to feel capable, gently exploring is will. I know the feeling very well. I’ve been patient with the timing, observing, never forcing him to choose the game as his path to learn.

Today once we got home… he took a step in choosing it for himself. He picked up the ball, asked the questions, and said he wants to practice every day.

So I opened the dojo.

Lesson 2 - Fundamentals. Foundation first.
