Closing on October 25 at @craftcontemporary in LA, Adebunmi Gbadebo (@adebooms) is featured in “tierra,” a biennial exhibition foregrounding the work of Latinx, Indigenous, and Black artists whose practices reflect emotional, familial, and cultural connections to land. Within these works, earth often appears as ancestor, relative, or teacher; a deep-time relationship shaped through kinship rather than ownership. Lineages emerge through matriarchal and ancestral histories, where making stewards knowledge across generations and geographies. #AdebunmiGbadebo

“The works that I built for this Venice Biennale are symbolic of not just the plantation but the spaces that we occupied.”—Adebunmi Gbadebo @adebooms’s coil-built ceramic trees recall loblolly pines–some of the tallest known trees on Earth, under which enslaved people in this region buried their loved ones. The artist and her relatives often go to the forest to identify the oldest trees, so as to recover headstones that were either purposefully hidden there or lost to the swamps. In doing so, they re-root memory in places marked by unfreedom. Gbadebo titles her clay vessels after the inscriptions on the headstones, marking them as containers holding material and sacred information. Join us in giving a warm welcome to our October Mentorship Artists in Residence: Funlola Coker (Local) and Adebunmi Gbadebo (National)! Funlola and Adebunmi share craft based practices rooted in sculptural experimentation, hybridizing materials, processes, and historical references connected to their respective heritages and broader Nigerian ancestry. Their time in residence provides the space to coalesce around shared artistic languages and new creative explorations. Funlola Coker is a Massachusetts-based sculptor whose practice utilizes materials and techniques rooted in craft to follow research threads in the realm of recollection, imagination, and the surreal. Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, Coker’s work draws on nostalgic memories to build narrative sculptures in the context of Yoruba cosmology and African futurism. Adebunmi Gbadebo is a Philadelphia-based artist, working across ceramics, sculpture and installation. Using materials like indigo dye, human hair collected throughout the African diaspora, and soil from the grounds of the True Blue plantation in South Carolina, Gbadebo explores her family’s history of enslavement in the American South through traditional African pottery techniques connected to her Nigerian ancestry. A week after our official launch the Clay Commons Podcast is back! Just a small reintroduction to get us started, but keep an eye out for more episodes soon. Voici encore quelques oeuvres qui étaient dans le grand pavillon à Giardini pour la biennale de Venise. J’ai beaucoup aimé ces sculptures en bois ! Et puis certains travaux composés de cheveux m’ont interpellés ... avec évidemment comme thématiques récurrentes: le retour aux racines, l’identité, la mémoire... bref, des questions intemporelles et interculturelles ! C’était aussi la première fois que je voyais de la terre mélangée à du cheveux, sous forme de « poteries » mais aussi des touffes de cheveux encolées qui apportaient un effet texturé à de longs panneaux peints... intéressant ces matières quand on s’interroge sur la partie symbolique des cheveux... Je vais essayer de retrouver le nom des artistes que je ne connaissais pas , et petit à petit les taguer sur les visuels ! 😆💪🏻 #biennaledevenise #artwork #hairartwork #africandiaspora #africanartist

Last week, our Head Curator and Executive Director led a trip to the Venice Biennale as part of The Clay Studio’s Travel Program! Swipe through to see some of the Galleries and artworks they experienced at the Venice Biennale and Homo Faber, including that of Resident Artist alumni, Adebunmi Gbadebo. They were joined by some friends from the Fabric Workshop and Museum(@fabricworkshop), and had fabulous tours led by Context Travel. Next year’s trip is to Asheville.
