There’s a free festival this weekend, dedicated to Black women and non-binary voices in music. Power & Respect takes over Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (@queenelizabetholympicpark) on 11 and 12 July, part of The Music Is Black Festival from East Bank. Men still take home around 70% of bookings across the industry. This weekend flips that. @jamzsupernova takes over Saturday with Lava La Rue (@lavalarue), Terri Walker and 25 years of Cooly G. @yazminlacey, TYSON and @bornnbread take over Sunday, with Sheila Maurice-Grey and BORN N BREAD’s own competition winners Cleopatra and Polly Chronic on the bill. Super Sunday this Sunday in Manchester. UKG vs BASSLINE special this Sunday at @freightislandmcr - looking like busiest one of the series so far this summer. Also, because England got through and it’s World Cup fever, this event will go onto til 8pm now and then the venue will be putting on Brazil vs Norway QF game which you’re welcome to stay & watch. Headliners on from 2.30pm so get down early! Then I’m excited to be heading straight over to @renae.mcr - playing there for the first time; a venue beloved by all my fave selectors in the city. Adele Tondu @adele_tondu National treasure and absolute gem of the Manchester scene, much loved DJ and music connoisseur Adele Tondu brings an irresistible blend of multi-genre knowledge, intuitive blends and massive energy behind the decks. Back in the day, her Unity Radio breakfast show woke the city up to the freshest sounds, and the last time she was behind the renae decks for the MOBORIGINS event, she dropped a high octane flip of Cybotron’s “Clear”, which we still talk about to this day. Una Lee @harriet.u.lee Rounding off the line up is our own Una Lee, fresh off a storming set at Moovin Festival where she mixed the snap of electro with disco euphoria, ragga energy and house grooves, grounding it all in dub sonics and a sound system sensibility.
