On the left is the white kimono of my professor, @ademredzovic , Adem Redzovic of @downtownjiujitsuclubchicago - the Downtown Jiu Jitsu club, Chicago. On the right is my black kimono. In the middle is the black belt of professor Redzovic on the left, and the black belt I was awarded by him last night next to it. They hang together wet on the wall of an old hotel near the old bridge of Mostar, Hercegovina, after yet another training session of what is now a countless number of sessions. In Jiu Jitsu I have four people I consider teachers. The first is @remcopardoel Remco Pardoel, the first non-Brazilian to do Mundials, and UFC veteran who famously went up against the legendary @realroyce Gracie family. I own him much. Next was @marcelinobjj , Marcelino Freitas of Novo Uniao and a true master of the sport. He taught me a lot about leverage and the power of clean technique. Also there is Aron Milam of @rgapdx , who completely reframed my understanding of the art. He is gold. And then there is the aforementioned Adem Redzovic, who is a true master of the game and truly beautiful person to be around. I owe an unplayable debt to all my teachers that can only be paid forward to others who seek knowledge of Jiu Jitsu. To be awarded a black belt likely means different things to different people. To me it means I must acknowledge my teachers, thank them, and try to live up to the good examples they set. It takes about a decade on average. Mine took longer. Much happens in the path of training. Often one of two things are filtered: either the arrogant person is filtered out of the gym, or the arrogance is filtered out of the person. Not completely, of course, as we’re still flawed humans waking paths of existence, but anyone who knows this path will know also that it begins as a physical journey, becomes intellectual, and arrives somewhere philosophical or spiritual. The pain you battle, the fear you overcome, and persistence and dedication with which you train will force you to travel to places of deep introspective reflection; the humiliation of submitting to another’s mercy requires no less. Many thanks to my hundreds of training partners, teachers, and above all God.
