POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
At our last general meeting of the semester, we reflected on the life of our former Historian from the years of 2020-2022, Adeola Omoloja. Adeola’s long standing service to ALD & PES along with multiple organizations across campus is truly incomprehensible. Along with being our treasured Historian for 2 years, Adeola worked tirelessly as a Senator for TTU’s College of Engineering, chaired on the Diversity Committee in SGA, advocated for International Students with International Student Life, studied rigorously as part of the Honors College, and facilitated a community within the Honors Dorm. One cannot even begin to fully grasp the number of lives he impacted, the hearts he touched, and the legacy he left. But, Ade was well beyond the work he did for the community. He was a youthful soul, an eager leader, a contagious smile, and a reliable friend. Ade was only one semester away from graduating with his Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering with a minor in Mathematics and had bright dreams for his future. He wanted to take on the challenges of the world by helping innovate and brainstorm methods for improvements in public works systems. He had a passion for trying and learning new things, and he persevered in every situation, never losing faith in his monumental ambitions. Adeola dedicated so much of his time to contributing to the TTU community and became a cherished friend to us all along the way. We will forever mourn his contagious smile, his youthful soul, and his eagerness to change the world. To honor Ade, our executive board created the Adeola Omoloja Leadership Award to be given to officers of ALD & PES who show the same dedication to their community as Ade once did. After deliberation from our executive board, the officer chosen to receive the Adeola Omoloja Leadership Award is our President, Kaylee Sexton!

For this month's general meeting, RISE joined us to present their Raiders Respond (Bystander Intervention) Workshop! Participants were taught to define bystander intervention, recognize common reasons why someone might not intervene, describe something you can do to intervene, define consent at Texas Tech, and learn where to report Title IX concerns. In addition, thanks to the courtesy of RISE, our members received a free Raising Cane's meal!

We are deeply heartbroken to receive the news about the passing of Adeola Omoloja. To many of us, Ade was more than a fellow student at Texas Tech. He was a colleague, a mentor, a friend—the epitome of what it means to be a Red Raider. He served as a Senator for the College of Engineering and as the Chair of the Diversity Committee in the Student Government Association. His impact on campus went well beyond SGA. He was a beloved member of the Honors College, as an Ambassador and a Community Advisor, a strong advocate for International Students with the International Student Life and an exceptional student of Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering. We will miss him dearly at the Student Government Association. On behalf of all students at Texas Tech University and the Student Government Association, we ardently extend our deepest condolences to the Omoloja family and friends. Adeola will be known for his brightest contributions in our lives—whether that be his warm welcome in the Senate Chamber or his inspiring passion for advocacy—as his zealous legacy in leadership continues to motivate us to strive for success. Rest in power! We love and miss you, Ade! ❤️🖤🤍

@jerodfoster proclaims it is #smokeyandtheflatlanders week and so it must be. I bring you another round of photos from the second half of our trip. Please also keep the Village of Ruidoso in your thoughts and prayers as they fight to contain the McBride Wildfire that was sparked earlier this week.

****McBride Fire Update: Sadly, two fatalities have been reported as a result of the fire that started Tuesday afternoon. The fire is still at 0% containment and has burned 5,000+ acres and with it more than 200 structures. Numbers are easy to report, but they represent more than just statistics. Lives, livelihoods, and much more is wrapped up in those figures, and the fire is not out and the work for the community in many ways has just begun. Please keep Ruidoso, New Mexico, in your thoughts. A special thanks goes to the emergency and fire fighting professionals, as well as all others that are putting in many sleepless hours to keep the community safe and informed. Day FOUR for the #smokeyandtheflatlanders, as you might gather from my last post, started drastically different than the mornings prior. We awoke under a blanket of damp, flaky snow, overcast conditions, and hours worth of steady but light precipitation (something the area desperately needs right now). Our mileage was short, so we didn’t mind huddling for a bit in our tents, as well as taking a bit of time for them to dry as the weather resided. Our original plan to ascend the forest road up to the Nogal Peak trailhead now presented a challenging predicament, one that we chose not to pursue given the group size, the conditions of the rough road after fresh snowfall, and the time we would most likely need to get over the pass. Instead, we chose to take the pavement down to Bonito Lake Road and navigate to our camp using Plan/Route B. This is a beautiful area that shows the scars from a major, decade-old wildfire, and the lake is still under re-construction from the ash and heavy sediment that washed into it as a result. What started out as a cold and dreary day with some emotional responses similarly in the dumps (the wind and cold didn’t help) became a beautiful, golden-hour, sun-drenched ride up to camp and a solid last meal in the backcountry. As we settled into our freeze-drieds that evening, we spent a good amount of time in reflection of the previous days and anticipating our final day, closing the loop back to Ruidoso. Route Scout Episode FOUR is linked in my bio. Enjoy!

****Before my original post, I want to ask that you send your prayers and positive vibes to Ruidoso, New Mexico, today as wildfires are currently striking neighborhoods within the village limits, as well as surrounding areas. A combination of extremely high winds and drought conditions have ignited an area that is still under recovery from major fires that took place a decade ago. Many folks are evacuating the village, and homes and businesses have been impacted. Please keep everyone in the area in your thoughts, especially first responders and fire personnel, and we’ll hope for a change in conditions soon! Day TWO of #smokeyandtheflatlanders saw students descending (one crashing—no injuries) down into Glencoe, New Mexico, and cranking up the infamous Devils Canyon climb. Per usual, the canyon was warm and legs from the previous day’s climbing were hit hard again by what seemed like an endless ascent up to a high point that offers 360-degree views, highlighting Sierra Blanca, Nogal Peak, and the grassland-like environment surrounding Fort Stanton. After a quick yoga session with @bd_weaver (this guy does it all, folks), a fast and fun gravel descent into the Fort Stanton-Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area took the students through geological time travel before climbing a bump in elevation to that evening’s camp. The Fort Stanton area always looks beautiful during golden hour, and the campsite was a welcome sight at the end of a challenging day. Later that evening, @bikesordeath recorded Episode 108 of his podcast, and the clear night sky was just about the best thing to sit under during our discussion. Follow the link in the bio to see the second Route Scout episode in full! It should properly be titled The One Where the @kuatracks Breaks. Heads up for more tomorrow!

We’re three weeks past returning from the Adventure Media tour, and I’m just now able to put some eyeballs on my shots from the trip! It’s time, though, to let a few out! Therefore, I declare this #smokeyandtheflatlanders Week! What do you get for sticking around? Good question! Leading each post will be a preview of an episode my 10-year-old daughter and I made for a series called Route Scout. Each episode served the class as a preview of each day’s segment of our entire five-day ride. We shot this as a way to spend time together, but y’all, my 10-year-old killed it! If you want to see the entire episode, hit the link 🔗 in my bio! After the Route Scout preview, you’ll see nine shots I selected from the day that represent the environment in which the students rode. @bikepackingcom has a wonderful catalog of routes from all over the world, and we selected the Billy the Kid and Smokey Bear route as our special lab this year. The route starts in Ruidoso, New Mexico, and spins 100 miles in and out of the Lincoln National Forest before returning to home base. We chose to complete it over five days to allow students not only a great, challenging trip, but to also have the time to adequately work on their project, a documentary about the correlation between outdoor recreation and mental health (more on this later, but you can get a taste for it on @bikesordeath Episode 108). Day ONE was a super ride out of town and up into the mountains looking over Glencoe, NM. The day was either down or up, and it gave the class a taste of what the next few days were going to be and feel like. Loads of views, rugged forest service roads, and a great backcountry campsite were in store, and the day’s weather played nicely with us. Some muscles might have been aching for these flatlanders at camp that evening. A solid start to the ride, the week, and the experience! More to come!
