Artist Spotlight: Éireann and I

Éireann and I is a community archive that chronicles stories centered around heritage, activism, and art. They are part of a growing movement of grassroots efforts from marginalized communities to collect and make accessible their experiences outside of traditional archival institutions. This archive functions as a space where they can make collective decisions about what is valuable for preservation, shape a collective memory of experiences, and control the means by which stories of past and present are constructed.

Over the last year, Éireann and I have joined the Museum of Everyone on ‘Communal’, a residency programme taking place in various institutions across Ireland. Viewing themselves as guests in these institutions, they have developed events focused on the politics of hospitality, exploring dynamics between migrants and locals, as well as between artists and institutions. They have also taken on the role of hosts, inviting guest artists to join them in facilitating intimate spaces for further exploration of these topics.

Éireann and I Salon sees the activation of the gallery space with an installation focused on African hairstyling practices. This installation focuses on self-fashioning and allows viewers to explore the meanings of cultural expression and visual agency as a restorative practice for migrants. We welcome members of the African diaspora in Athlone to contribute a personal photograph themed around hair to the installation.

🖌️ Éireann and I will be hosting a workshop and film screening with Luan Gallery on the 31st of August

As part of our salon installation, Éireann and I are hosting a workshop taking place on the 31st of August from 12-2:30 pm in the @luangalleryathlone Participants are invited to a viewing of Chez Jolie Coiffure by Rosine Mbakam.

The documentary takes place in Jolie Coiffure, a hair salon in the Matonge district of Brussels run by Cameroonian hairdresser Sabine. Despite having been in Belgium for almost a decade, Sabine is still awaiting a decision on her asylum application. This intimate portrait captures Sabine’s daily life at the salon, perfecting her craft whilst whiling away time talking and laughing with an eclectic cast of patrons and visitors, many of whom also harbour the same fears about deportation.

After viewing the documentary, we will respond to it through discussion and collage making with @adesewa_

Bookings are essential for attendance and can be made by contacting Luan Gallery directly at
090 6442154 or info@luangallery.ie
