Robert Morris (1969)
Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
Exhibition catalogue, with an essay by Annette Michelson

About: The exhibition brought together Robert Morris’s recent work as he investigated sculpture through weight, scale, material, gravity, and the viewer’s movement through space. Rather than treating sculpture as an autonomous object, Morris emphasized how form is encountered bodily and understood in relation to its surroundings. This approach had already been set out in his influential *Notes on Sculpture* essays, published in Artforum from 1966 onwards. In April 1969, just months before the Corcoran exhibition, he published “Notes on Sculpture, Part 4: Beyond Objects.”

🤍 Why it matters: Morris was a major figure in the development of Minimalism, particularly through his use of simple geometric forms, industrial materials, repetition, and large-scale installations. His style evolved, with a peak in (my favorite) perceptual, bodily sculptures of the mid-1960s, before changing direction again to post- minimalist explorations (materiality, chance, organic compositions, ...). The exhibition presented these ideas at a decisive moment, when Minimalist sculpture was expanding into an experience of space, perception, and participation...

💡 Insightful backstory: Morris was both a sculptor and an influential writer on sculpture. His Notes on Sculpture essays helped shape the debate around Minimalism while the movement was still developing. The Corcoran catalogue pairs this broader context with Annette Michelson’s essay, “Robert Morris: An Aesthetics of Transgression,” which considers the implications of his practice. Together, Morris’s own writing and Michelson’s critical perspective make the 1969 document an important debate about what sculpture could be.

Last image: One of Morris's classic axonometric drawings, from 1967. Fun fact: Robert Morris taught Fred Sandback at Yale University, as a visiting professor, in the Spring 1967.

FREQUENCY 3240 Hz

Created in Melbourne, Australia, in 2018.

More than 420 hours of fine art dotting went into the creation of this work.

Inspired by the visual language of frequency, the Chladni Plate experiment and the exploratory research of Nikola Tesla, the work explores the relationship between vibration, pattern and perception.

From the Hong Art Museum, Chongqing, China
to Pashmin Art Gallery, Hamburg
and next to Schlossmuseum Greiz.
