Adewale Yusuf steps down as CEO of @altschoolafrica

Adewale Yusuf has stepped down as CEO of AltSchool Africa after five years, handing over day-to-day leadership to co-founder Akintunde Sultan. Adewale Yusuf says the move will allow him to spend more time with his family in the US while supporting the company at the leadership level.

Under Akintunde Sultan, AltSchool plans to expand beyond diploma programmes through degree pathways with partner institutions. With more than 200,000 users on its platform, the company wants to focus on student outcomes rather than just growing its numbers.

I first connected with Sultan, co-founder of AltSchool, sometime in late June when we were preparing for the Techvival Africa Conference 2026.

We jumped on a call and spoke at length. He shared the direction the company was going and the initiatives and offerings they were launching after which we started exploring possible partnerships between DEXA and AltSchool, some of which are still very much on the table.

But one thing was clear about this dude. He's a results-driven leader, and that quality comes with another ingredient called attention to detail.

After the news broke yesterday, I went straight to WhatsApp to message him and found myself reading through our previous conversations again.

From the questions he asked, the partnership opportunities he proposed, down to the little things around communication, measurement, and value delivery, it became even clearer that the guy on the other end of that call was super intentional about what he was building.

Now, seeing him named as the new CEO of AltSchool, I must say, the right job was given to the right man.

Adewale Yusuf has led a great team at AltSchool and set the pace for what is possible in EdTech across Africa. With about $4 million in reported funding and a platform serving learners across multiple countries, there's a solid foundation to build on.

Sultan now has the opportunity to consolidate on that foundation and take things even further.

These are the guys our EdTech startups look up to. And seeing someone whose approach to leadership I've witnessed firsthand step into this role makes the news even more exciting.

Congratulations again, Big Chief!

A new chapter begins at @altschoolafrica.

@adewaleyusuf_ has stepped down as CEO of the Nigerian edtech company he co-founded in 2021, handing leadership to fellow co-founder @hacksultan

The transition comes as AltSchool reports reaching over 200,000 users, with plans to shift its focus from primarily acquiring learners to improving educational outcomes and expanding university degree pathways.

Yusuf is expected to remain involved with the company as Sultan A takes charge of its next growth phase.

After 5 years of building @altschoolafrica with @adewaleyusuf_ and @opeawo , today I’m officially stepping down as CTO and moving into the CEO role.

The goal is to provide global education to Africans at an affordable cost. Instead of going to the UK and spending £30,000 to get a degree, you can attend the same university through AltSchool for less than £15,000.
Same school, same lecturers, same BSc.
Equal value. Equal access. Local pricing.

I’m officially launching our degree programmes on degree dot altschoolafrica dot com, and over the next few months, you’ll see more global universities join the AltSchool network.
Welcome to the edX of Africa.

AltSchool Africa CEO Adewale Yusuf has stepped down after five years, handing over leadership to co-founder Akintunde Sultan.

The Nigerian edtech startup is entering a new phase as it prepares to expand beyond technology skills training into university degree programmes.

Founded in 2021, AltSchool has grown into one of Nigeria's recognised digital education platforms, offering courses in software engineering, data, cybersecurity and other professional disciplines.

Under Sultan's leadership, the company plans to introduce accredited university degree pathways through academic partnerships, potentially allowing eligible students to convert previous learning into academic credits.

AltSchool reported 119,000 platform users in its 2025 impact report.

The leadership change comes as African edtech companies face increasing pressure to deliver stronger learning and employment outcomes.

This Techy-Tuesday I had the pleasure of interviewing the convener of the Beyond Africa Conference, happening in Austin on November 7 and his journey gave us plenty to talk about.

From building one of the largest online academies in Africa “AltSchool Africa” to his work founding tech media conglomerate Techpoint Africa, he shared lessons from years of entrepreneurship, fundraising, and bringing people together. Now, he’s channeling that experience into a new vision: cultivating a community of builders, starting in Austin.

I’ll be there, interviewing some exceptional leaders on-site—and I think you should be there too. Come for the connections and ideas. I’ll bring the questions… including the ones you might be too polite to ask. 😂

I’m excited to see what this inaugural edition sets in motion, both this year and in the years ahead.
