NEW WORK: Rule of Thirds is a new 85-seat, all-day bento and izakaya restaurant by co-founders George Padilla (@geopad) and JT Vuong (@2le_jt), formerly of Okonomi (@okonomibk), in collaboration with @hospitalitysunday. Isometric created a fun yet sophisticated visual identity that transposes Japanese food culture into the diverse and inventive Brooklyn restaurant context. Through the expressive use of a 2/3-circle shape and an illustrative cast of characters, the design extends to a street-level mural, signage, menus, packaging, and digital collateral. The identity system reflects the restaurant’s core aesthetics: minimalist and refined, but with a sense of light-hearted, communal energy.

Celebrating A/D/O which will permanently close its doors at the end of May this year.
We feel very fortunate to be the Artist in residence from June 2018 - Jan 2019. We have such found memories of the place having had an amazing experience there but also because A/D/O represented for us an achievement of how far design had come in the last decade. That design wasn’t just the tool of commerce for selling more stuff, or even something purely utilitarian that facilitated our everyday lives, but that it could also be critical; fostering debates, be a tool for deep research, challenge perspectives and explore the possible futures we can have. A/D/O also created a bridge between the narrative conceptual thinking of the European design schools and the seductive and expressive aesthetics of New York design scene.

A/D/O will leave a legacy in their collaborations and the great projects they enabled with so many wonderful and diverse creatives but they also leave a big hole in the design world which will be missed. There’s going to be a lot of holes left in the wake of Covid and finding new ways to fill them is a daunting challenge that’s also exciting.
Thank you A/D/O, BMW, MINI and all the amazing team that made it the cultural powerhouse it was.
