Bella the Bear. 💔
My sweet Bella girl lost her sudden battle to cancer two weeks ago.

Bella was abandoned tied to a fence in Queens NY at the age of five…. bleeding from cage sores, lactating from a recent litter and covered with pee and feces.
She was supposed to be a temporary foster with Dan and I for two weeks.
First thing she did when she saw me was lunge at me because she was so afraid.
No one adopted her because Bella was so fearful. She immediately bonded with me and Dan and faithfully, voraciously protected us. For all we know, we were the only love she had ever known. We were happy she chose us.

When the pandemic hit we took her to Connecticut where she accidentally terrorized the neighbors with her humongous harmless bark as she decompressed. All bark no bite. Bella the Bear.

She was such an incredible companion. She was cheeky. She was intelligent. She was standoffish, but still warm. She loved the water despite the first time when she saw it, she tried to attack it, only to turn into quite the mermaid. My little swimmer.

She would make guest star appearances at Virtual Piano Lounge or TV interviews or Zoom radio calls.

As the years went by, she became trusting of strangers and even became friends with other dogs. The neighbors grew to love her and she loved them back.

Bella kept my head on straight during some of the roughest moments of my life by reminding me that resilience and love overcome all. She taught me and Dan so much and we loved her beyond measure. Our family loved her and Uncle Bobby showed us she was truly the sweetest girl worthy of trust.

I’m broken hearted she only got 4.5 years of unconditional love in her 10 years of life.
She always was next to me. She lay under the piano whenever I wrote.

We don’t deserve dogs… and I’m so grateful I was able to know such a deep, honest and hard earned love. Just like Bianca, Bella was a beacon of hope and a role model for a misunderstood breed. I hope she likes the song Dan wrote for her on his album. She certainly heard it being written.

The new Dan Pugach Big Band Album “Bianca Reimagined” is out today.

We don’t deserve dogs- I say it all the time. Anyone who has ever released their bias and got to know a pitbull knows they are the most sentient and loving of all the dog breeds- and also the most abused and misrepresented.

We’ve been fostering and rehabilitating pitbulls since 2010- one dog at a time, living by the star fish fable - even though 1 million pitbulls are euthanized in the United States PER YEAR.

Partial proceeds of both the CD release at DROM and album sales go directly to rescues we work with, including Pound Hounds Rescue who pulled Bianca from death row in 2011.

Pitbulls have helped us deal with our own traumas while resiliently hiding and thriving through their own
