We don’t subscribe to the “new year, new you” belief, but with a new year, this is a chance to look back on the previous year and reflect on what you’re proud of and what lessons you learned. In an effort to continuously grow and stretch what we are capable of, here are our top lessons learned about ourselves in 2025.

We hope you do this practice as well, whether it be for improving your endurance training or life in general. Small improvements made daily are how things go from impossible to possible.

Share your lessons in the comments and if you have questions about how to make improvements in your training for next year, shoot us a DM.

A special thank you to the athletes who have trusted us with their training. This work is work of passion and being part of your success is what drives us to continue to grow in our coaching.

Moving from pancake flat Charleston, SC to the foothills of the Adirondacks was an eye opener as a runner. All I’d had to practice “hills” was a bridge for two years of running before moving to upstate NY.

If you haven’t been here before, everything is a hill. To keep my easy runs easy, I was ever so humbled by having to walk the uphills. Downhills were down right terrifying and basically falling while trying to hold on for dear life.

The trail I do my long runs on has over a mile of ascent at the start and for the longest time I had to do a run/hike combo. Now I can actually run the entire climb while keeping my heart rate aerobic. Gains!

A lot goes into training for hilly or mountainous terrain. A lot of it comes with a combination of strength training, doing a lot of running uphill, nailing the techniques of running downhill, and practicing over and over.

If you’re someone who struggles when it comes to the hills or you want to improve your skills as a mountain runner, reach out to us!

We are big proponents of strength training for runners…especially when you incorporate movements that will specifically target muscles needed for running.

Running is a single leg sport, so here are just 3 key movements that will help strengthen your legs to both prevent injury and make you a stronger and more durable runner.

If the weather or other factors force you to get your run done on the treadmill, there are ways to make it less mundane so you aren’t counting the seconds as they slowly pass.

1. Watch something inspiring. Our go to choice is typically an ultrarunning documentary on YouTube. Something about watching people grind it out makes my little treadmill run seem pretty okay. If that’s not your jam, put on a movie or something to keep you entertained during your run.

2. Switch up the incline. Changing the incline every few minutes breaks up the run mentally and gives you something to do during your run. A hilly treadmill workout also takes a lot of impact off and helps improve running economy overall.

3. Do a speed/interval workout. This also gives you something to do during your run and breaks it up mentally. Varying intensities keep the run interesting and even fun.

4. Break it up with strength exercises. Incorporating strength exercises such as weighted walking lunges or deadlifts every few minutes can help strengthen your legs, build muscular endurance, and give you practice running on fatigued legs. It also breaks up the run and makes it more manageable to get through. This type of workout is especially useful if training for obstacle course racing.

What are you doing for your next treadmill run?

Easy runs aren’t the time to be a hero. They are supposed to be easy and feel easy. If you think you look slow out there, I can assure you that no one cares or is paying attention except YOU! So slow down and enjoy the ride.😎
