Story time: Last night, I spent some time outside with my big brothers, Sandile Khumalo SC and Smanga Sethene. Let me explain why the moment was special for me.

The last time all 3 of us were together like this was about 3 years ago at the JHB Labour Court. Khumalo SC was my opponent in a case, and Sethene was the (acting) judge.🇿🇦⚖️❤️ Sethene AJ invited a group of school children to join us for a meet and greet in his chambers before the hearing. The moment was as inspiring for me as it was for the children, and he left me feeling that I'd also love to also act as a judge one day.

(Swipe, the story continues...)😁

After Khumalo SC gave me a hiding in Court (which I'm still bitter about)😅 we got to know each other outside. So generous is he with his time and spirit, that since then, we have spent time over lunches and he became a mentor that I love and look up to.

A year or so later, I walked the path that Sethene had carved in my heart and got to act as a judge. The silk robes that I have worn every time I have visited the judicial bench belong to Khumalo SC. I've paid him a visit for encouragement and wisdom each time I've gone there... And that is why this moment last night was so special to me🇿🇦⚖️❤️

Hee ndaaa! We were also honoured by the presence of my dear friend and classmate, and superstar celebrity lawyer of this Republic of South Ah, Lerato Moela. You need to be comfortable with the stares that come with walking beside him in public. What a gentleman🇿🇦⚖️❤️

ASSIGNMENT

There is one question I frequently get because of the label attached to fraternity I work in. To most, lawyers are labelled as “liars” and the most frequent question I get asked is; “How do you still remain a believer in the legal fraternity?”

One thing I can say for sure is that my path in this field was never accidental. Personally, I do not see law as a career, but as an assignment. To me, law is a calling wrapped in obedience. One thing I know as well is that Faith and the law do not compete; they converge. For justice, integrity, and truth are not man-made ideas, they are Kingdom principles.

Injustice and unfairness trouble my spirit because they trouble the heart of my father. The Bible tells us in Psalm 37:28 that the Lord loves justice and does not forsake His saints and the word further says “Let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream.” So mine is a co-partnership with God to let justice roll. Every client, every matter is an opportunity for me to bring forth justice and make sure fairness is established to its full extent.

So everyday I wake up, I show up not merely as a legal practitioner, but as a believer who has been commissioned, sent and deployed to steward truth, confront injustice, and stand in the gap where fairness must speak.
