Friendship, I’ve come to realize, is its own kind of love story—quieter than romance, maybe, but often longer lived. I have half a dozen soulmates who have walked beside me for decades. We met as children, as teenagers, as wild heathens stumbling through New York City nights. We’ve watched each other break and rebuild, move away and redefine home, fall in love and bury dreams, carry children and carry grief. The safety that grows out of this history is its own covenant. We travel together and bring each other coffee in bed. We know each other’s parents’ names. We ask about the sick cat, the recent heartbreak, the mother’s surgery and the dreams that are still waiting to be born. Our anniversaries stack years, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 years. We remember the inside jokes from 1999. These friendships are the scaffolding of my life— these loves are more faithful than almost anything else I know. 💚
