One of the most stunning points in Cornwall.

Trevose Head Lighthouse.

Built in 1847, and overlooking the 150 feet cliffs.

Some old and new drone footage from 2020 vs now.

Looking at the old footage we can see why we had the occasional “holy moly, we have A LOT to do” moments at the start of the project (and quite a few during it). Sometimes those little jobs felt so insignificant compared to what was left that we had moments where we wondered if we’d ever finish. But two years of showing up for big jobs and small got it done. Something we still remind ourselves of on projects (especially when we are impatient).

Hidden deep in the folds of West Penwith, beside the ancient tower of Sancreed Parish Church, Sancreed House feels less like a B&B & more like the private country home of impossibly tasteful friends. Built in 1830 as a Georgian rectory for Rector William Stabback, the Grade II-listed house still carries the grace of its ecclesiastical past: tall sash windows catching the indescribable Cornish light, elegant plasterwork, a sweeping staircase, artwork throughout & a Tuscan porch framing gardens alive with birdsong.

Yet there is nothing stiff or museum-like here. Owners Grove & Pablo - with lives stretching from London & Sydney to New Zealand & Uruguay - have softened the grandeur with contemporary warmth, creativity & quiet luxury. The house smells of freshly roasted coffee, warm bread & cakes cooling in the kitchen. Breakfasts are a serious affair: homemade yoghurt with lemon curd, local eggs, mushrooms aplenty, Cornish cheeses & exceptional gluten-free bread baked in-house. Afternoon tea is centred around Pablo’s fresh cakes & exquisite scones. You lounge in the drawing room or out on the terrace; massages arrive on request. You cannot fail to relax & reset.

There are just 4 serene en-suite B&B rooms & 3 stone cottages scattered through the grounds, each comfortable rather than extravagant. Our room - Bird - brims with organic toiletries, garden views, sumptuous bedding. Outside in the grounds: an indoor pool, barrel sauna, 2 outdoor log-heated ‘nature baths’ & 1.5 acres of beautiful gardens, where the elemental silence feels almost medicinal. A garden shed where John le Carré once wrote his two non-fiction books is soon to become the therapy room - which somehow tells you everything about the spirit of the place.

Better still is what lies beyond the gates: the ancient mystery of Carn Euny, the prehistoric hush of Bartinney Downs, the raw Atlantic drama of Zennor Cove & a ‘drive for the ages’ to The Gurnard’s Head foodie pub — all mapped out by hosts who know every hidden lane & secret path in Cornwall’s far west.

This is pure class. Pablo & Grove have brought serious style & warm, professional hospitality to this unspoilt Kernow corner. Top drawer guys!

On our Penwith luxury roadtrip, we were privileged to meet hospitality genius South African Shaun Bebington, the brains behind ‘Pocketful of Stones’, the Penzance~Long Rock outfit behind Caspyn Gin. It is rooted in west Cornwall’s coastal folklore & stone mythology, particularly the “mermaid” and standing-stone legends near Porthcurno.

Durbanite Shaun first cut his teeth in noughties London, running The Lucan in Fitzrovia - a punchy, atmospheric pub he later sold to Guy Ritchie as part of the filmmaker’s growing London pub empire. That West London chapter set the tone: layered interiors, proper bartending craft, & a founding belief that pubs should feel slightly mythic rather than that hackneyed ‘Farrow & Ball’ clean, clipped functionality.

We visited his production wizard Jess at the boutique distillery on the edge of Long Rock - a strip of land where railway, sea mist & Mount’s Bay collide. It’s a working part of town & a reclaimed area of sand, marsh & tidal shallows overlooking St Michael’s Mount. It’s not quite Penzance, not yet open coast.

Bebington with his team has built a cultish, detail-driven spirits house. Caspyn Gin is its calling card: bright, coastal & aromatic, built around west Cornish botanicals that ooze citrus, floral & faintly wild. It tastes like lemony scented hedgerows warmed by Atlantic light. The Marmalade Gin passes muster too.

Shaun has also just stepped back into pub life with The Red Lion in Newlyn, the harbourside inn that looks straight onto one of Cornwall’s most storied working fishing ports. Perched just above the quay, it has Penwith shanties & Cornish fishing tales in its very bones: a place that has seen fish landed at dawn for generations, alongside painters, smugglers, trawlermen & the Newlyn School artists, who turned the harbour into myth.

Expect straightforward, seasonal cooking, local seafood & an emphasis on affordability rather than theatre. The much-discussed £20 Sunday lunches look to be an absolute winner - get booked in now & enjoy a stellar line up of Shaun’s impressive spirits & a warm South African welcome. The huge beer garden overlooking Newlyn harbour rocks too!
