🌿 Where to take your food waste in the Western Cape, Episode 1. This week we are visiting the OBSID Community Composting Site in Observatory, Cape Town. Located beneath the railway bridge at the corner of Oak Street and Ive Street, the site gives people living in the surrounding area a simple way to divert their household food waste from landfill and return it to the soil. Tom, founder of Earth Again Co, takes us behind the scenes to show us what happens once that food waste goes into the Aerobins and how it eventually becomes nutrient-rich compost that can be used in local gardens and green spaces. You can bring: 🍎 Fruit and vegetable scraps ☕ Coffee grounds 🍵 Tea bags 🥚 Crushed eggshells 🥖 Small amounts of bread and rice 🌿 Cut flowers and dead plants OBSID Community Composting Site: ⏰ Monday - Saturday: 9:00am - 5:00pm ⏰ Sunday: 9:00am - 1:00pm 📍 Corner of Oak Street & Ive Street, beneath the railway bridge, Observatory, Cape Town ✅ Follow along as we keep exploring ways you can divert your food waste from landfill and contribute to locally made compost for your community! 👀 We’re putting all these places in one handy spot soon. This time of year fruit flies drive me crazy! The vinegar traps have caught a lot but always swallow a few and a few run into my eye every year 😵‍💫 🪰🪰🏆🥇😂 Now back to our Harry Potter marathon! . . #harrypotter #funny #memes #goldensnitch #fruitflies

Visited @capbridge to walk around the park and enjoy the incredible display of what nature offers combined with human ingenuity. Definitely a beautiful place worth visiting, as long as you aren’t afraid of heights or a wobbly bridge! Have you ever visited the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park (just outside of Vancouver, B.C.)? . . #suspensionbridge #vancouver #canada🇨🇦 #nature #beautiful

Our Aerobin is doing incredibly well! Everything we’ve been adding — our kitchen scraps, garden waste and other organic material — is breaking down beautifully and slowly turning into rich compost. And the heat inside this bin is incredible! That warmth is coming from all the microorganisms hard at work breaking everything down. It’s so rewarding to see what was once waste transforming into something we can eventually put back into our garden. We’re getting closer and closer to our first Aerobin harvest… and I can’t wait to see what’s waiting inside! Let’s learn together as we grow together. Getting prepared to plant out our home grown garlic as seed garlic in these brand new @birdiesgardenproducts raised beds! Hopefully I can produce some extremely high quality bulbs for next season where I’ll use the best ones as seed for the pond garden project (follow the progress @pantryfarmco for each phase of this project!) I filled about 1/4-1/2 of each bed with the grass that needed to be dug up to level out the beds and other pruned yard debris from our garden. Then I used @ebstone_organics compost as the base layer to top off the yard debris and help build soil biology in the deeper part of the beds. Next I added layers of e.b. Stone Organics Raised Bed soil and home made compost. Finally some balanced granular organic fertilizer from @espomaorganic to provide plenty of long term nutrients for our garlic’s long growing season. I also watered in the beds to provide moisture for the microbes and soil life because the bagged material was pretty dry. We have pesky squirrels in our neighborhood that like to dig up fresh raised beds and pots this time of year as they hide walnuts all around the neighborhood… 🙄 So to solve this problem, as well as birds digging up the beds, I cover any fresh beds with horticultural fleece/mesh until the garlic is large enough to not be bothered by animals. Planting day is coming in mid October! Happy gardening! . . #gardening #bedprep #growyourown #organic #garlic

I changed up my Yukon Gold potato potting mix this season and it paided off! In the 6 grow bags I added more OMRI Azomite rock dust, supplemented with Espoma organic Bone Meal and topped off with homemade compost from my Aerobin composter. As a result, the yields were bountiful! I'll definitely repeat the mix next year. Let me know in the comments if you have tried growing 🥔? #potato #homegrownpotatoes #chicagogarden #gardens_by_glenn
