Happy Heavenly Birthday, Afu Samuela Fiefia
I LOVE and MISS you so much!

I don’t know where to begin other than say my heart aches and mourns without you here. I miss your infectious smile, presence, dance moves, style but most of all your spirit and testimony.

Experiencing all of the “firsts” without Afu have been difficult, but we have been blessed with amazing families, friends and communities to lean on and carry us through them.

These moments help me focus on the Atonement of Jesus Christ that gives me comfort, peace, and hope that we will see Afu again. I know Afu is on the other side of the veil, continuing to bring others closer to the Savior.

I am a better person, father, husband, and coach because of you. Watching you battle for over 4 years, while remaining optimistic about life and maintaining an eternal perspective has changed me forever!

Your example gives me hope and motivation to strive to live my life in such a way that I can be in the presence of God.

12 hours before Afu passed through the veil, we were blessed to share a few sacred moments with him. This would be last conversation we would have together.
In that conversation, his first words weren’t how great and amazing parents we were or any other matter here on earth, but it was to express his love for the Savior
Jesus Christ.

As part of my talk for his funeral, I didn’t know what, or how much I would share from that experience. But in my heart, I felt that his testimony wasn’t something I should keep for myself, it was something to be shared freely, and especially with those who knew and loved him through this his journey here on earth.

Afu’s love for Jesus Christ, is something we all strive to live for. That in our last moments, we too can share our love and gratitude for who He was, who He is, and who He will forever be for us all, Our Savior.

We are because of Him. He Lives!

This last weekend we were able to celebrate the life of a young man who changed us forever. I am grateful for Afu and his family. Their example of pure love and faith in Christ is incomparable. We will forever miss our time on earth with him but, truly, look forward to seeing him again. We love you, forever, Afu!!!

Our hearts are heavy as we honor the memory of Afu Fiefia, a beloved former student of our seminary who recently passed away at the age of 19 after a courageous battle with cancer. Afu’s light, faith, and testimony of Christ left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him here.

While we mourn his physical absence, we find peace in the promise of the Savior. The Book of Mormon provides us with a beautiful description of the peace Afu is now experiencing:

“The spirits of those who are righteous are received into a state of happiness, which is called paradise, a state of rest, a state of peace, where they shall rest from all their troubles and from all care, and sorrow.” - Alma 40:12

We also hold fast to the words of the New Testament: “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” - John 11:25

The Plan of Salvation teaches us that death is not the end, but a transition to a place of rest and healing. As Elder Jeffrey R. Holland beautifully taught:

“Trust in God. Hold on to His love. Know that one day the dawn will break brightly and all shadows of mortality will flee.”

We bear our testimony that through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, Afu is whole again. We pray for his family and friends, asking that they may feel the “peace of God, which passeth all understanding” during this difficult time.

Families are eternal, and we look forward to the day of a joyful reunion which is made possible through the infinite power and love of our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ.

The most amazing soul I will ever know has been welcomed home by our Heavenly Father. 💛

Afu has been my friend since middle school… and in God’s perfect timing, he brought our lives together again in a way I will forever cherish. Afu saved me and gave me purpose. Through everything he was going through, he still chose to serve and take care of me. His love, strength, and testimony have changed me forever. He has been the most Christlike example in my life.

THANK YOU AFU for everything. You have touched my heart forever and ever and ever.

I saw my friend @missyscoresby share this story yesterday. And remember talking to @fa_deuce and @oph_12 about Afu relapsing last year.

I dug in last night and early this morning. @afiefia was, and is special. What he’s done to bring his community together is not something normal. His parents @cfiefia @fiefia and their love for their son is so evident. I was so inspired by him and the words his parents shared when I saw it last night, that I woke up at 3:45 am and just sat there and appreciated my life.

I’ve struggled with figuring out a way to honor all these stories I get. Knowing I only have so much capacity, but out of respect for the ones going through it and out of respect for the ones who believe in me enough to send me these stories, I want to try something new. Inspired by Tia.

If @thetiabeestokes can dance for people to support them, why can’t I workout for people to show them support in my own way?… it may be corny. But my workout today and yesterday have felt more much more purposeful. Knowing I’m not just sending “thoughts and prayers”… but I’m actually living my life to honor other people’s lives.

In July of 2022, while we were competing at USA Nationals in Indiana, I received a phone call from my dear friend Celeste, Afu’s mom. Afu had been suffering from uncharacteristic headaches, and there was a possibility the cancer had spread.

I hung up the phone in tears.

The following day our girls battled one game after another through exhausting heat fighting until the very end. But what I remember most wasn’t the finish.

It was the hour we spent sitting in a dugout together afterward talking about life; the good and the bad, about perspective, about how fortunate we are to have healthy bodies, each other, and the opportunity to play the game we love.

Softball felt different that day.

Afu lived by these words:

Live as if we don’t.”

He embodied them.

With a heart full of gratitude, you begin to see each life experience as a gift. You realize the day’s greatness didn’t just happen you were allowed to witness it. You begin to notice joyful moments, surprising news, funny encounters, and small victories worth celebrating.

That’s how Afu lived.
And that is what he taught us.

The way the Fiefia/Roberts family has shared their journey through faith, light, and unwavering love is humbling beyond words. We extend our deepest condolences and steadfast support to them during this heartbreaking time.
We will carry Afu’s example with us always.🤍

This will not be a traditional service as we honor Afu’s Tongan culture and the way we gather as family and community. We welcome all who attend to be part of the full service and the celebration that follows.
