Shared Streets is something I never really planned on making.

I shot all of this two years ago while travelling through Thailand. Back then, I wasn’t looking for a story. I was just looking at people.

Faces that caught my attention. Eyes that said something without saying anything. The way someone walked, waited, worked, laughed, or simply existed in the middle of a street.

I kept filming these moments without really knowing why.

Two years later, I found myself going through all that footage again. I started putting a few shots together, then a few more. Slowly, all these moments from different days and different people began to find their place next to each other.

And somehow, they started to feel like one film.

There’s no real story here. No beginning or end. Just people passing through the same streets, living completely different lives, crossing paths without ever knowing each other.

Locals, travellers, workers, strangers. Some stayed in the frame for a second, some for a little longer. But for that brief moment, they were part of what I saw.

Maybe that’s all this film is.

Just moments that found their way into my frame.

A place seen through the people who made it feel alive.

I have worked in the hospitality industry for the last four years, and to this day, one thing that has stayed with me is @amitahuja__ saying, “Okay Meraj, everybody can make food content, but can you please tell me how you feel after eating the dish we spent months perfecting?”
4years later…
I don’t think I have ever met someone who can express the emotion behind “just another dish” the way we do 🙆🏻‍♀️

Super grateful and fortunate that I get to bring such incredible thoughts to life with @mollyscourtyard because we have people like @likithshetty that just let us be our creative selves🤩

Jhol Momos was just another item on the menu that needed to be shot, but here’s what we did as a creative team:

1. We spoke to the chef to understand the thought behind the dish. Chef @mahesh_bist_me is not someone who creates anything without intention. He told us, “Maine iske ingredients Thailand se specially mangaya hai.” Hence, he wanted the dish to feel premium.

2. The models were told to eat it in a very polished way. Classy, clean, no dripping, no mess. But something didn’t feel right. So I ate one, got two more people to eat it the way they naturally would, and suddenly there it was. The mess, the comfort, the mouthful, the feeling of truly enjoying comfort food.

These were the two things we knew we had to portray.

I really wanted the lights focused on the models, but because this idea came to me at the very last minute, we didn’t have spotlights. So we improvised. We used two cutters and made it work. Thanks to our light assistants🫱🏻‍🫲🏼
